Slanic-Moldova brings together several travel interests: hiking trails with different time requirements, mineral springs with a long spa town history, and cultural sites around Parcul Central. When planning your visit, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between an easy forest walk, several-hour mountain hikes, and the spa town’s historical heritage.

Hiking Between Forest Trails and Mountain Ridges

The 300 de scări trail is an easy forest walk that can be enjoyed in both summer and winter. It requires neither special physical preparation nor specialist equipment for mountain hiking. The trail begins near the Slănic-Moldova mineral springs area. On the return, it passes through the Popas area along Cheile Slănicului; the gorge and Cascada Slănicului are part of this trail.

The stated durations vary considerably for longer hikes. The Șaua Nemirei trail starts in Slănic-Moldova and takes four to five hours. The Valea Uzului hiking trail crosses the main ridge of the Nemira Mountains and takes nine to ten hours. In terms of duration, Șaua Nemirei is the shorter hike; the route for Valea Uzului includes a crossing of the main ridge.

More Trails and Winter Sports

The Traseu Belvedere starts in Parcul Central and follows a two-kilometre footpath that takes 45 minutes to reach a viewpoint. It is therefore much shorter than the two mountain hikes and has a clearly defined time frame. For the Nemira ski slope, the relevant details are technical rather than walking times: it is 1,414 metres long, rated easy, and has an average gradient of 17.6 percent. Operations may vary seasonally. If you plan to ski, check whether it is operating during your intended visit.

Mineral Springs and Spa Town History

Mineral springs are also part of the town’s profile. The first mineral spring in Slănic-Moldova was discovered on 20 July 1801 by Serdar Mihalache Spiridon. The spa town of Slănic-Moldova currently has nine licensed mineral springs. Its mineral waters received gold medals at exhibitions in Vienna (1873), Paris (World’s Fair, 1889) and Bucharest (Cooperative Exhibition, 1894). The timeline spans the discovery and the awards of the late 19th century, linking the history of the discovery with the later recognition of the mineral waters.

Park, Architecture and Festivals

Parcul Central covers 4.16 hectares and offers tourists an attractive setting for leisure. The park is home to Foișor Muzical, built in the Art Nouveau style. Cazinoul Regal was completed in 1894, based on plans by architects George Sterian and H. Rick. The two buildings are notable for different architectural details: the Art Nouveau style of the music pavilion, and the completion year and architects of Cazinoul Regal.

On 5 January 2025, the seventh Festival of Old-Style Christmas and New Year Customs took place in Parcul Central. The festival has become a tradition and brings together bear groups, masked groups, and groups of Christmas carol singers from the valleys of the Slănic and Trotuș rivers every year. In August 2025, Slănic-Moldova hosted the two-day event “La izvor de tradiție,” dedicated to tradition, folk costume and folk singing.
