Hemeiuș combines nature with architectural and local history. The arboretum is known for an old floodplain forest and exotic plant species; at Lacul Lilieci, a bird sanctuary and its importance as a habitat shape the natural landscape. Churches, a memorial house and historic ruins add another dimension to the area. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between botanical, ornithological and cultural-historical interests.

Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary

The Hemeiuș Arboretum covers 50 hectares and is located in the commune of Hemeiuș in Bacău County. It combines an old floodplain forest with exotic species introduced between 1880 and 1916. The floodplain forest and the introduced plant species are distinct components of the arboretum. The arboretum’s inventory included 1,346 species of trees, shrubs and vines. The area and species count describe two different aspects: the 50 hectares indicate the size of the arboretum, while the inventory shows the diversity of the plant species recorded.

Lacul Lilieci is a national protected area in IUCN Category IV and an ornithological nature reserve along the Bistrița floodplain. It is approximately 4 kilometers long and an average of 800 meters wide. The area is especially important to birds for breeding, feeding and resting. These three functions illustrate its importance for the different needs of birdlife. The approximate dimensions also give an indication of the scale of the protected area, without reducing its ecological role to a single attribute.

Churches, Castle and Historic Sites

The “Sfinții Voievozi” Church in Fântânele has a cruciform floor plan and a two-story vestibule. The bell tower is located on the upper floor of this vestibule. The church is believed to date from around 1700 and is listed as a historic monument in the administrative unit of Hemeiuș. This building therefore brings together architectural features, an approximate historical dating and protected monument status.

Castelul Roșu is located in the Hemeiuș Arboretum. The Grigore Tăbăcaru Memorial House in Hemeiuș dates from 1861. Near Fântânele are also the ruins of the Church of Livada Curții; they date from the 15th to 16th centuries and are considered a site of local tourist interest. The area’s history is thus reflected in different ways: in the named memorial house and in the much older church ruins. The approximate dating of the ruins and the probable period assigned to the “Sfinții Voievozi” Church should be understood as such, not as exact construction dates.
