Gura Văii: Churches, Archaeology and History
Accommodation in Gura Văii
Churches from the 17th and 18th centuries, archaeological sites and a long history of settlement offer several historical perspectives on Gura Văii. The landscape of the commune adds another dimension.
Churches and Their Building History
The wooden church “Biserica de lemn cu hramul «Sf. Nicolae» de la Gura Văii” was built in 1680 and is located in the centre of the village. South of Gura Văii, in the former hamlet of Pătrăşcani, stands the church “Biserica cu hramurile «Adormirea Maicii Domnului şi Sf. Ştefan» de la Gura Văii”. It was built in 1750 by Ștefan Roset Velban and extended in the 19th century. Their building histories therefore point to two different dates and locations.
The church “Naşterea Maicii Domnului” in Gura Văii was originally named “Biserica «Sf. Nicolae», din Râpile de Jos” and received its current name in 1963. Its iconostasis contains seven large icons painted in the second half of the 18th century. This building thus brings together the name change in the 20th century and the earlier dating of the icons—two distinct chronological points of reference in the church’s history.
Archaeology and Settlement History
The Gura Văii–La Coşuri archaeological site is located on Coşuri Hill, north of the village. It is about 1.5 kilometres north of the commune centre. This approximate distance refers to the centre; the site’s location is also identified by the hill and its position north of the village.
Another archaeological reference is the Pătrășcani-Siliște settlement in the commune of Gura Văii. It was inhabited during the Early Bronze Age and during phases Ic3 and Ic2 in the development of the Monteoru culture. The two archaeological locations have different focuses: Gura Văii–La Coşuri is described in terms of the site’s location, while Pătrășcani-Siliște is described in terms of the settlement’s chronology.
The village’s history also extends beyond individual buildings. Historically, Gura Văii was a Răzeși village; its former settlement centre was at Huitoare, on the slope of Runcu Hill. Over time, the settlement’s centre of gravity shifted to the left bank of the Trotuș. Huitoare and the left bank thus mark two distinct stages in this settlement history.
