Comănești offers everything from cultural history and archaeological traces to mountain tourism and recreation on the Trotuș River. There is also a protected nature reserve, a cultural winter festival and a rail connection between Transylvania and Moldavia. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around these interests: architecture, nature, tours, winter culture or travelling by train.

Palace and archaeological history

The Ghica-Comănești Palace is a historic monument. Italian craftsmen built it in 1890 for Dimitrie Ghika under the direction of architect Albert Galleron. Its style combines late Baroque and eclecticism. Those interested in architecture can view the building in terms of its period, patron and design.

The archaeological site “Situl arheologic de la Vermeşti – Cetăţuia” in Oraş Comăneşti includes a settlement belonging to the Eneolithic Cucuteni B culture. The palace and the archaeological site offer different historical perspectives: a monument with a named architectural style on the one hand, and a settlement from the Cucuteni B culture on the other.

Mountain tourism and tours

The Galion-Lapoș tourist area is one of the main mountain tourism attractions in Comănești. The signposted circular route Faleză – Pod Șupan – Goanța – Pasarelă pietonală is also one of the main attractions in this area. The Comănești – Galion – Lapoș – Valea Uzului mountain trail is a mountain tourism route associated with Comănești.

The Centru – Faleză – Galion – Podei – Podine – Lunca de Jos – Centru cycling route is also associated with the town. The options differ in type: a signposted circular route, a mountain trail and a cycling route. If you are including tours in your travel plans, you can first decide whether you are more interested in mountain hiking or cycling.

Recreation on the Trotuș and nature at Șupan

The Trotuș recreation centre is located on the banks of the Trotuș River and is considered Comănești’s main attraction for recreational tourism. The signposted promenade along the Trotuș is also part of the recreational tourism offering. By contrast, nature is the focus at the Șupan stream: it is one of the protected nature reserves and is a stratotype for the Sarmatian-type Șupan Formation. The reserve covers 0.10 ha and is of palaeontological interest. This is how recreation on the Trotuș differs from the protection and palaeontology associated with Șupan.

Cultural event and travel

The “Urșilor” Festival in Comănești is held annually as a cultural winter event in the town in Bacău County. The festival of traditional customs and practices includes a bear parade; groups from several regions of Moldavia also take part. Check the event dates in advance.

Comănești railway station is on the Ciceu–Adjud railway line, which connects Transylvania with Moldavia. Check the timetable for your specific journey.
