In Utena County, cosmological questions, regional history and waterside experiences come together. Museums, historic buildings, park trails and cultural performances offer different ways to shape your trip around your own interests. When choosing where to stay, it helps to first decide which places and themes you want to define your visit.

Museums between the cosmos and city history

The Lietuvos etnokosmologijos muziejus combines astronomy, ethnic culture and the relationship between people and the cosmos. A visit offers a different perspective on how people understand their place in the universe. The Utenos kraštotyros muziejus, by contrast, focuses on Utena’s past and present: its extensive collection and smart technologies let visitors explore the city’s history. Two halls are devoted to temporary exhibitions, with something new to see each month.

In Visaginas, the Visagino miesto muziejus focuses on the identity of a city shaped by nuclear energy. Its exhibition explores the stories behind that identity. Visitors can also try operating a full-scale simulator of the control room at the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. Educational programs and cultural events complement the offerings at the Utenos kraštotyros muziejus. If you plan to visit several museums, it is worth choosing exhibitions based on whether you are more interested in city history, temporary exhibitions or the connection with nuclear energy.

Manor and ethnographic heritage

Utenos dvaras preserves the manor’s red-brick buildings, outbuildings and gardens. The different types of buildings give the site its historic character and set it apart from a museum visit alone. In the ethnographic village of Vaišnoriškės, visitors can see two reconstructed traditional-style homes, a barn, two stables and saunas. Together, these show different elements of a village ensemble, from homes to outbuildings. This makes it possible to combine an interest in regional architecture and everyday culture with a visit to a preserved manor complex.

Trails, a lake and views

At Lake Zarasas, the observation wheel offers panoramic views from a height of 17 metres. Its ring-shaped design has a diameter of 34 metres. The area around the wheel also has a lakeside walking path, as well as opportunities to explore by boat or bicycle.

Dauniškis Park in Utena has numerous walking paths and benches. Other facilities include a pontoon bridge, several playgrounds, beaches and free Wi-Fi. As facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit. The park fountain operates from late spring to early autumn and has daytime and evening programs; the schedule may vary.

For a longer walk, try the 10-kilometre Šventoji Springs Educational Trail. It ends with a self-operated pontoon crossing at the narrowest point of the Antalieptė Reservoir. The stated length and the pontoon crossing at the end make it easy to plan this trail as a destination in its own right. In Anykščiai Regional Park, the Treetop Walking Path runs 20 metres above the ground. It is considered the first path of its kind in the Baltics and offers a view from above alongside the ground-level trails.

Regional cuisine and trip planning

The Gaidelių farmstead offers an educational demonstration of how to prepare traditional Aukštaitian fish soup. It draws on the long-standing fishing traditions of Eastern Aukštaitija. If you would like to include the demonstration in your plans, ask in advance about current visiting and booking details. This adds a culinary theme alongside the museums, manor and waterside experiences, without limiting your trip to just one type of outing.

In Visaginas, municipal bus route 8 is part of the local timetable, with 14 December 2025 stated as its effective date. Check the current timetable before travelling, as departure times may change. When choosing where to stay, you can then consider your own priorities: museums and exhibitions, parks and lakes, or regional cultural offerings. Compare your accommodation’s location with the places you want to visit, and plan your connections to suit your itinerary.

Lithuania in a broader cultural context

Lithuania also offers a broader cultural context. The country’s five UNESCO World Heritage Sites include the Vilnius Historic Centre, added to the World Heritage List in 1994, and Modernist Kaunas: Architecture of Optimism, 1919–1939, added in 2023. The Baltic Song and Dance Celebration takes place in Lithuania every four years and brings together thousands of performers in song and dance. If you would like to attend, check the dates for the specific edition separately. These nationwide cultural offerings add further perspectives on Lithuania to the museums and traditions of Utena County.
