When looking for a hotel in Sudeikiai, it helps to first decide what kind of destination you are looking for. The town combines nature-based recreation by the water with connections to art and history. Depending on what interests you on your trip, you can focus on Lake Alaušas or on the town’s cultural themes.

On the southern shore of Lake Alaušas

Sudeikiai is located on the southern shore of Lake Alaušas. The lakeshore near Sudeikiai is considered a popular destination for enjoying nature; the lake is known for its shallow shoreline areas and clear, clean waters rich in fish. If you would especially like to combine your stay with nature-based recreation, the lakeside location is a specific point to consider when choosing your destination.

Art and painting in Sudeikiai

The archive at the Sudeikių dailės galerija contains more than 100 works by professional artists and photographers. The collection gives the town’s art scene a specific focus. In addition, the “Alaušas” plein-air painting event has been held in Sudeikiai since 1999. It adds a recurring painting tradition to the connection with the collection. The town therefore has two distinct connections to art: the gallery archive and its works, and a plein-air painting event bearing the name “Alaušas.”

The Neoclassical church

The present-day brick Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sudeikiai was built in 1825 in the Neoclassical style. It has neither towers nor columns in the interior. Neoclassical architecture often draws on ancient models and a clear formal language; the name of the style thus gives the church an art-historical connection. The year it was built and its architectural features are especially interesting if you are interested in the history and design of religious buildings.

Personal stories in the churchyard

The grave of J. Šnapštys-Margalis (1877–1921), a priest, poet and translator, is located in the churchyard in Sudeikiai. He served there as a parish priest from 1920 to 1921 and died in Sudeikiai. The churchyard is also home to the reinterred grave of Dr. J. Girnius (1915–1994), a philosopher who was born in Sudeikiai and died in Boston. In Šnapštys-Margalis’s case, his service as a parish priest in Sudeikiai comes together with his roles as a poet and translator; in Girnius’s case, the focus is on his origins in the town and the reinterment in 1995. The two graves add personal connections to the town’s history alongside its architectural history.

An archaeological site nearby

The surrounding area also includes Maneičių: a significant archaeological site lies there on the shore of Lake Alaušas and is considered a cultural heritage monument. It adds a regional archaeological focus to the themes found in Sudeikiai.

Seasonal activities on the lake

A brochure published in 2024 by the Sudeikių daugiafunkcis centras lists diving in Lake Alaušas with an instructor, as well as an exploratory and leisure trip on a raft. The activities mentioned there are seasonal. If one of them is important to you, check in advance whether it will be available during your travel dates.
