Discover Utena
Accommodation in Utena
Utena offers several different starting points for planning your trip: walking paths and gardens in Dauniškis Park, exhibitions, churches with clearly distinct architectural styles, and a square that marks the area of the Old Town. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Utena, these themes can help you choose the focus of your trip. The following places can be explored through themes of nature and activity, museum collections, or architecture and history.
Walking paths and routes
Dauniškis Park offers several walking paths and gardens, a pontoon bridge, several playgrounds and beaches. The 9 km “Utena Happiness Road” is intended for walking and for travelling by scooter or bicycle. For planning, the questions are different: Which park amenities interest you, and would you like to follow a route of a set length on foot, by scooter or by bicycle? Check the condition of individual facilities before your visit.
Museums between art and history
The exhibitions at the Utena Museum of Local Lore cover topics in archaeology, history, ethnography, photography, literature and art. The museum also organises exhibitions of folk art and photography, as well as exhibitions featuring works by professional artists and students. The distinction between subject areas and organised art presentations can help you choose: you can be guided by a field of knowledge, or by art and the creators involved.
The Museum of Freedom Fighters has a different focus: it covers important events in the Utena region and Lithuania from 1940 to 1965. The timeframe is clearly defined, as is the scope: regional history and events across the country. Unlike the subject-specific and artistic themes of the Museum of Local Lore, this museum focuses on a limited historical period.
Churches and architecture
The Church of Divine Providence in Utena is designed in a contemporary, unconventional architectural style. The main church building has an elliptical shape, while the bell tower has a triangular floor plan. The two shapes therefore relate to different parts of the building: the ellipse to the main building and the triangle to the tower. The church also contains stained-glass windows by Kazys Morkūnas (1925–2014). The stained glass provides a specific connection to art within the building.
The Church of the Ascension offers a different architectural perspective: it was completed in 1884 in the Historicist style. The comparison is therefore between a contemporary, unconventional design and a Historicist building with a specific year of completion.
Old Town and city history
Uteni Square marks the area of Utena’s Old Town and invites residents and visitors to the city to attend events. If an event date is important for your trip, check the dates in advance.
In 2011, a fountain was presented to Utena at Lake Dauniškis to mark the city’s 750th anniversary. The two dates have different roles: 2011 is the year of the gift, while the anniversary number refers to the occasion.
