Lakes, rivers, forests and protected areas shape the landscape of Ignalina District. When planning your trip, you can focus on nature or add regional history and activities. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider which of these aspects of the region you want to define your stay.

Landscape in Ignalina District

The district has up to 200 lakes and several dozen rivers and ponds. Forests cover one third of the district, and a quarter consists of protected areas. A large part of Aukštaitija National Park lies within the district; many of the fourteen regional parks and various nature reserves are also located there. Bodies of water, forests and protected areas thus offer different perspectives on the landscape.

Regional history at the museum

The Ignalina Regional Museum presents the history of the region and its residents, as well as their crafts, customs and traditions. Its ethnographic exhibition features authentic household items, tools and equipment from the 19th and 20th centuries. These objects provide a vivid, tangible way to explore regional history.

The museum explains the journey of flax, from sowing to becoming a bedspread or tablecloth. An exhibition on traditional fishing methods also shows how the fish caught helped the region’s people survive. The two topics offer different insights: one focuses on processing flax, the other on fishing and its importance. The museum regularly organizes events, exhibitions and educational activities.

Trails and sporting activities

The interpretive walking trail at Paliesius Manor is suitable for hiking, jogging and cycling, and passes through a quiet, damp forest. The “Pearl Necklace of Ignalina Region’s Attractions” route runs through Aukštaitija National Park. You can therefore identify the Paliesius trail by the activities mentioned and its forest setting, while the “Pearl Necklace” has a clear geographical connection to the national park.

The Lithuanian Winter Sports Centre offers alpine skiing. If this activity is a deciding factor for your trip, check the centre’s latest information in advance.

Other places in the district

The beekeeping museum in Stripeikiai is located in the wider district, on the edge of Minčia Forest in the northwestern part of Aukštaitija National Park. Stripeikiai is the park’s oldest village and was first mentioned in Livonian chronicles in 1357. The museum offers interactive exhibitions and honey tastings, and is part of the administration of Aukštaitija National Park and Labanoras Regional Park.

In Ginučiai, the water mill is protected by the state and belongs to the Directorate of Aukštaitija National Park and Labanoras Regional Park. The mill’s exhibition welcomes visitor groups for guided tours by prior reservation. This reservation requirement is an important difference from the activities regularly organized at the Ignalina Museum.
