In Alytus District, rivers, lakes and forests provide clear landmarks for your trip: the Nemunas flows through the district, Lake Žuvintas covers 970 hectares, and a 19-kilometre loop of the river encircles Punios šilas. There are also routes, a distinctive bridge and programmes focused on regional baked goods. When choosing a hotel, you can start by considering which of these experiences you want to shape your stay.

Water, Forest and Nature Trails

The Nemunas offers different ways to experience the landscape. The river flows through Alytus District; at Punios šilas, the 19-kilometre loop describes how the Nemunas encircles the forest. Lake Žuvintas adds another element, covering 970 hectares. The river, forest and lake therefore give nature lovers several starting points for planning their time outdoors.

Visitors are free to enter the Punios šilas Landscape Reserve. The separately restricted nature reserve zone is distinct from it, so check the rules in force there before your visit. In the Vidzgiris Botanical Reserve, there is a marked, 9-kilometre walking trail. Take the distance into account when planning, and check for current updates before setting out, as trail conditions may change.

Bridge and Routes in the Alytus Area

Alytus is home to the White Rose Bridge, Lithuania’s highest pedestrian and bicycle bridge. It connects the cycle paths on both banks of the Nemunas there. This makes the structure both an architectural landmark and a practical part of the cycling network. Access conditions and routes may change, so check the latest information before your visit.

The 52-kilometre Camino de Santiago route in the Alytus area also offers a clearly defined itinerary: it passes through Punia and includes Punia’s St James’ Church. By comparison, the marked walking trail in Vidzgiris is 9 kilometres long. The two distances show the difference in scale between the routes; the longer one also includes a specific landmark in Punia: the church. Check current updates on trail conditions and signage before setting out on the Camino de Santiago route.

Regional Baked Goods and Cultural Programmes

At Pivašiūnų amatų centras, visitors can make butter themselves to enjoy with the Dzūkija pastry “buikelė,” and then taste it. They can also prepare and sample a variety of Dzūkija baked goods, including potato bandos, buckwheat babkas, cakes, small pastries and kūčiukai. The programme combines tasting with hands-on preparation, offering a practical introduction to these specialities.

At Alovės amatų kiemelis, the organisation “Susiedai” offers the theatrical educational programme “Duonos kelias iki stalo” (The Journey of Bread to the Table). It takes place in an authentically reconstructed 19th-century farmhouse setting. The focus on bread and the historical setting give the programme a different emphasis from preparing and tasting baked goods at Pivašiūnų amatų centras. Dapiškis Manor in Dapkiškiai offers educational programmes for children and guided tours for adults. If you want to include one of these programmes in your plans, enquire about arrangements and availability before your trip.

Lithuania as a Broader Cultural Setting

Beyond the district, Lithuania offers a nationwide cultural setting: two of the country’s five UNESCO World Heritage Sites are the Vilnius Historic Centre, inscribed in 1994, and Modernist Kaunas: Architecture of Optimism (1919–1939), inscribed in 2023. The Baltic Song and Dance Celebration is also part of this broader cultural context. It takes place in Lithuania every four years and brings together thousands of participants for singing and dancing. If you want to include this event in your travel plans, check the dates of the current edition separately.
