Daugai brings together a renovated market square, sites connected to local history, and prepared routes for walking and cycling. If you’re looking for a hotel in Daugai, you can plan your stay around cultural history, exploring the routes, or taking a raft trip on Lake Daugų. These different themes offer different starting points for planning.

Market Square, Church and Local History

The old market square has been renovated and is a leisure spot for families. It features a children’s playground, outdoor fitness equipment, and a flower garden. Play, exercise, and landscaped green space are all found here. If you’re interested in the everyday places of a destination, this offers a different way to explore it than visiting historical memorial sites.

The brick-built Daugų Dievo Apvaizdos bažnyčia was built from 1858 to 1862 to a design by architect Tomas Tišeckis. It features altered Gothic, Classical, and Baroque elements, as well as valuable works of art. The construction dates and architect’s name provide a specific historical context for the town; the different stylistic features add an architectural perspective.

The oak sculpture Daugis is also one of Daugai’s notable historical landmarks. It bears the inscription “Daugai” and was erected in 1979 on the initiative of Algimantas Zubavičius. Romas Klimavičius carved it from an oak selected by V. Šerpenskas, the Daugai forester.

In the old town centre is Šventapetrio kalnelis, a tree-covered hill that was once a castle hill. The first church in Daugai was probably built there later; today, a wooden cross stands on the hill. Its earlier use as a castle hill and the uncertain history of the church belong to different periods in the town’s history.

Memorial Sites and Lithuanian Traditions

The old Jewish cemetery in Daugai was in use from the 18th century until the Second World War; 81 gravestones remain. The cemetery in Daugai also contains the grave of Lithuanian partisans, with a memorial opposite the entrance to the central cemetery. In 1990, the remains of 24 partisans killed in the post-war period were reburied there. The memorial, dedicated in 1992, consists of an oak cross and oak walls. The walls bear the partisans’ names and years of birth and death.

An annual tradition shapes the events calendar in early July: Daugai celebrates the Coronation Day of King Mindaugas, Lithuania’s Statehood Day. If your stay falls during this time, check the specific event dates in advance.

Routes, Crafts and Excursions

Prepared routes through Daugai are available for exploring on foot or by bicycle. They can be followed using the “Gatvės gyvos” audio guide app, which can be downloaded for free. Check its availability before your trip. This lets you combine a choice of two ways to get around with an audio experience.

A raft trip is offered on Lake Daugų along the route Daugai – North Beach – Perkūnkalnis – Salos piliakalnis – Aukakalnis – Skonių kampas – Bandūragis. The route passes several named stops; the raft trip offers a different way to experience the area from the prepared walking or cycling routes. Check current availability with the provider.

At Daugų amatų kiemelis, at Pergalės g. 6, educational programmes cover topics such as buckwheat, baking buckwheat babka, and cooking fish soup in an outdoor kitchen. Willow weaving and traditional games are also included. If you’d like to plan this activity, confirm dates and availability with the provider in advance.

The village of Bukaučiškės II is part of the destination’s nearby surroundings. There, on a hill near the southern shore of Lake Didžiulis, stands a red-brick chapel. It adds a destination in the expressly nearby area to the options in Daugai, without being presented as a sight within the town itself.
