Lazdijai offers several distinct themes that can shape your travel plans: the architecture of St. Anne’s Church, public monuments and cultural connections, and a paved route from the town park to the town beach on Lake Baltajas. The Regional Museum’s educational programs are another option. Alongside historic sites, you can choose a specific walking route and a museum experience. Which aspects you focus on depends on whether you are more interested in architecture and commemorative culture or in outdoor activities.

Churches and Monuments in Lazdijai

The twin-towered, pseudo-basilica-style St. Anne’s Church was built in 1895 to a design by architect E. Lipskis. In a pseudo-basilica, the nave is higher than the side aisles; unlike a basilica, however, it does not have a separate upper window zone. The church also has an organ by Lithuanian organ builder Jonas Garalevičius. The building’s form and the organ offer different points of interest: the instrument, as well as the architecture, is part of the history of this church building. Here, a specific year of construction, a particular architectural style, and a named instrument come together in one place.

A monument to Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas was unveiled on March 11, 2017, in the square named after him in the center of Lazdijai, in front of St. Anne’s Church. The Independence Monument stands in Independence Square; it was erected in 1938 and restored in 1990. The two monuments highlight different points in time: for the first, the 2017 unveiling is the reference point; for the second, the original construction and subsequent restoration are central. Together, they form two memorial sites with different historical timeframes.

Cultural Themes and Educational Programs

The ā€œTree of Songsā€ sculpture also adds a cultural dimension. It was unveiled in the courtyard of the Lazdijai Cultural Centre and symbolically recalls the importance of the Song Festival to the culture of the country and the nation. Alongside architecture and memorial sites, this brings another theme into focus: the role of communal singing in culture.

Another historic site is the grave of Motiejus Gustaitis in Lazdijai Cemetery. It is considered a historical monument of local significance and adds a different kind of memorial site to the monuments in the squares.

The Lazdijai Regional Museum offers educational programs, including candle making and archaeological excavations. The activities differ: candle making focuses on hands-on crafting, while the excavations involve archaeological work. If you would like to include one of the programs in your stay, check current availability directly with the museum.

Walking from the Town Park to the Town Beach

For a walk, the 1.9 km route, fully paved throughout, leads from Lazdijai Town Park to the public town beach on Lake Baltajas. Paths in the park connect it to the beach. The route differs from the individual cultural sites: instead of a building or monument, it focuses on a path between two specific destinations. Its length and surface give you practical points of reference for planning your day. Conditions may change, so check the route’s current condition before setting out.
