Accommodation in Atesninkai I
For a stay connected with Atesninkai I, nature and cultural heritage offer different areas of focus. Meteliai Regional Park is known for its lakes and wildlife; Atesninkų piliakalnis adds an archaeological perspective. Simnas and Mergalaukis are home to historic sites with their own distinctive character. You can choose your excursions based on whether you want to observe nature, explore architecture or visit a place of remembrance.
Lake scenery and nature watching
Meteliai Regional Park protects the large lakes of southern Lithuania—Dusia, Meteliai and Obelija—as well as the surrounding landscape. The visitor centre has an interactive exhibition and information about the life of the European pond turtle. From there, you can use optical equipment to observe the scenery around Lake Dusia and waterbirds on the lake. The exhibition and observation opportunities offer different ways to experience nature: you can learn about a particular species or take in the lake and landscape. As visitor services may change, check availability before your visit.
A 3.5-kilometre nature trail begins at the visitor centre. The stated length gives you a concrete indication of the route’s distance. Check whether the route is available before you travel.
Atesninkų piliakalnis
Atesninkų piliakalnis is located near the village of Atesninkai in Simno Eldership and dates from the first half of the 1st millennium. It lies at the northern end of a hill. Its oval surface is elongated along a north–south axis and measures 25 × 12 metres. The moderately steep slopes are up to 7 metres high and covered with a few pine trees. The surface is therefore a little more than twice as long as it is wide; the height measurement, by contrast, refers to the slopes. This distinction separates the dimensions of the surface from the terrain profile.
Access is via the Simnas–Kalvarija road and the Giluičiai intersection. In the village of Atesninkai, continue along a field track; a path then crosses the field to the hill. As access conditions may vary with field conditions, check access before setting out.
Architecture and remembrance
In nearby Simnas, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1520. It is considered the oldest building in Užnemunė and Lithuania’s only Renaissance church with a cruciform floor plan and basilica-like design. Public access may vary; check access arrangements before visiting.
A German First World War military cemetery is located in nearby Mergalaukis. The grave of Lieutenant Ernst Wurche lies at its centre. The two nearby places therefore offer different historical points of interest: architecture is the focus in Simnas, while Mergalaukis commemorates the First World War.
