Šventežeris: History, Churches and Historic Sites
Accommodation in Šventežeris
Šventežeris brings together local history with religious and archaeological themes. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the town centre, Lake Šventežeris and historic sites in the Šventežerio seniūnija municipality. This will help you decide whether to focus your stay mainly on the town’s history or on the municipality’s archaeological sites.
From a Land Grant to the First Mention of the Town
In 1511, Sigismund the Old granted the area of present-day Šventežeris to J. Radziwill. He founded the Seiriyai manor there; the area was later called Šventežeris. In 1645, the Šventežeris parish, manor and town are mentioned. The sequence runs from the transfer of the area, through the manor, to the later mention of the town and parish.
Churches, a Cross and Local History
The town’s first religious building was an Evangelical Reformed church built in 1598. The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1882. There are 284 years between the two construction dates—two specific milestones in the religious history of Šventežeris. A cross in the town reflects the cross-making traditions of the Dzūkija region.
Šventežeris also has a local history museum. If you plan to visit, check the opening hours in advance. The museum adds a dedicated focus on local history to the historic sites.
Historic Sites in the Municipality
The Šventežerio seniūnija municipality is home to several archaeological and historic sites. The Mikyčiai hillfort dates to the first millennium. A settlement associated with it, at the foot of the hillfort, covers 0.2 hectares.
The Prelomčiškė hillfort is associated with the Yotvingians, who lived there in the 13th century. A large Yotvingian settlement stood at the foot of the hillfort. From its summit, you can see a panorama of Lake Dusia. The Oninės festival is also celebrated at the hillfort every July; the exact programme may vary. If the festival is a key part of your visit, check the specific date in advance.
Giraitė hillfort is located beside the Verstaminai–Teizai road, and rare pine trees grow on it. The Government of Lithuania declared the hillfort a cultural monument in 1998. Another site is the Chapel of the Cross, St. Mary Queen of the Rosary: it is a Catholic pilgrimage site on the southern shore of Lake Dusia, near the Sutrė stream.
The Lake and Trip Planning
Lake Šventežeris is accessible from the north. As local access conditions may change, it is worth checking before your visit. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, first decide what you want to focus on: local history, the lake or the archaeological sites in the municipality. For a specific offer, you can then check whether its location and amenities suit your plans.
