In Alytus, cultural attractions and opportunities to relax at the Dailidė Lakes are highlights for visitors. The Alytaus kraštotyros muziejus presents the region’s history; the Anzelmas Matutis Memorial Museum preserves the study of a children’s poet and educator. The Kurorto Park adds trails, lakes and recreational areas. These varied attractions give you a practical basis for planning your trip around your own interests.

Museums: Regional History and Literature

Founded in 1928, the Alytaus kraštotyros muziejus presents the history of the Alytus region through modern, interactive exhibitions. Its educational activities cover Lithuanian history, numismatics, archaeology and ethnography. They use display cases and include practical tasks. The museum also offers mobile educational activities and bookable programs for birthdays, friends and families.

Numismatics is the study of coins; archaeology and ethnography offer additional subject-specific perspectives. This helps you understand the breadth of the museum’s topics and choose an educational activity based on a particular interest.

The Anzelmas Matutis Memorial Museum is housed in the home where the children’s poet and educator Anzelmas Matulevičius-Matutis lived from 1961 to 1985. On the second floor, his study has been preserved with its authentic furnishings, library, souvenirs and personal belongings. While the Alytaus kraštotyros muziejus explores a range of topics related to the region’s history, the memorial museum focuses on the life and work of one person.

DailidÄ— Lakes and Kurorto Park

The Small and Large Dailidė Lakes are former meanders of the Nemunas. The term “former meander” refers to an earlier course of the river, placing the lakes in a landscape shaped by the Nemunas. The 97.1-hectare Kurorto Park was established in 1930 in a natural pine forest. Walking and cycling trails run around the lakes; there are also beaches, fitness areas, recreation zones, beach volleyball courts and children’s playgrounds.

The park’s different areas cater to a range of interests: walking and cycling trails offer opportunities for exercise, while fitness areas, beach volleyball and children’s playgrounds provide other specific activities. Recreation zones and beaches add to the options. When planning, you can consider whether you mainly want to use the trails or visit one of the listed recreational areas.

The VIVI Wake Park is located beside a beach on the Large DailidÄ— Lake in Kurorto Park and offers wakeboarding. This is a seasonal summer activity. If wakeboarding is important to your travel plans, bear in mind that it is seasonal and check the operating dates in advance.

Sweet Treats on the Menu

For a sweet break, the menu at the “Traukinys M23” café lists waffles with various fillings, Napoleon chocolate cake and the dessert “Vienuolės.” If a particular dish is important to you, check the current menu before your visit; menu items may change.
