Rudimov: Nature, History and Hotels
Accommodation in Rudimov
Rudimov lies south of picturesque Poolšaví, among wooded hills in the valley of the Třešňůvka stream. Its average elevation is 334 metres. For a trip to the White Carpathians, this is where landscapes, local history and a variety of excursion options come together.
Landscape and Nature of the White Carpathians
The entire cadastral area of Rudimov lies within the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. Extensive high-trunk fruit orchards are a defining feature of the White Carpathians landscape. They are home to traditional regional fruit varieties adapted to the natural conditions. Rudimov’s extensive orchards also provide a refuge for orchids, specialist insect populations and birds that have been displaced from intensively farmed agricultural land.
Those interested in nature and the cultural landscape will find more than views of wooded hills: the orchards and their flora and fauna are also part of the region’s character. The protected landscape provides a geographical setting, while the individual trails and routes follow their own courses through the cadastral area.
History and Buildings in Rudimov
Animal castration was a traditional craft in Rudimov. At the beginning of the 20th century, almost all adult men in Rudimov practised this craft; the tradition has been documented there since 1545. The town’s history is also reflected in its architecture: a wooden log-frame bell tower dates from 1780 and is listed under number 2063. The richly carved wooden cross was created by a folk artist in 1820 and is listed under number 2064.
Archaeological finds from the Eneolithic, Hallstatt period, Celtic period and Early Middle Ages come from the cadastral area. The remains of the Slavic hillfort of Gradca are located in the Zachrástí–Ploštiny field area. Protected burial mounds can be found in the Gradca, Spalica and Paličky field areas. These historic sites and finds are spread across named field areas; together with the surviving buildings, they represent different periods in the town’s history.
Two war memorials also commemorate the town’s wartime history. The memorial to local victims of the First World War is an artificially constructed, pyramid-shaped group of rough-hewn sandstone blocks of different sizes. It includes a sculptural group of a woman and a dying soldier. A second memorial commemorates Romanian and Soviet soldiers who were killed in an artillery attack near the municipality during the Second World War.
Hiking and Cycling
A yellow-marked hiking trail connecting Slavičín and Bojkovice passes through the cadastral area. Two cycling routes also pass through it: Route 5054 runs from Slavičín to Luhačovice, while Route 5056 runs from Bojkovice to Luhačovice. Before setting out, check the current hiking trail markings, as well as the signage and surface conditions on the cycling routes.
Another trip with specific route details is the moderately difficult circular trail “Ze Slavičína na Petrůvku.” It is 15 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 238 metres and runs around Rudimov. This distinguishes it from the routes that pass through the cadastral area: both the length and elevation gain are specified for this circular trail. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Local Products and Special Visits
Fruit processing is also part of Rudimov’s history: many farmsteads had fruit dryers, dried fruit was exported from the town in large quantities, and plum butter was made in several places.
