Spytihněv brings together a settlement history shaped by the Morava, archaeological traces, the Baťův Canal and seasonal activities on the water. The Morava flows south of the town and has shaped life in the area for centuries. This gives you several different things to focus on when planning your trip: cultural history, a cycling route and activities on the water.

Archaeological traces and settlement history

At Hradišťsko near Spytihněv, the remains of a fortified lowland settlement have been preserved on the left bank, between the meanders of the Morava. The rampart is about 160 metres long and about 3 metres high; at its base, it is almost 20 metres wide. Its construction drew on an older tradition known from the period of Great Moravia. These dimensions give a concrete impression of the fortification described, while its connection to the Great Moravian period provides historical context for its construction.

The settlement may have been moved to the higher right bank of the Morava in the 13th or 14th century. The earlier settlement had been located near the fortified settlement since the 11th century. The two riverbanks and the different dates relate to separate stages in the settlement’s history.

Cycling route and the Baťův Canal

A marked route of the Moravian Cycle Trail runs through the municipal area of Spytihněv along the Morava and the Baťův Canal. The two waterways are therefore both associated with the cycling route described here. Near the Spytihněv weir, the man-made Baťův Canal branches off from the main course of the Morava; its first lock is located there. The branch and the lock illustrate how the canal and the river are connected at this point, while remaining distinct waterways.

Boat trips and facilities at the landing stage

The Na Rejdě landing stage is the home port of the excursion boats Morava, which has a capacity of 60 people, and Kordulka, which has a capacity of 11. Regular and pre-booked trips with bicycle transport are available from there. During the season, the MORAVA excursion boat also operates from landing stages in Spytihněv, Napajedla, Uherské Hradiště and Uherský Ostroh. If a trip fits your plans, check the current timetable before travelling.

Visitors can rent seven houseboats, motorboats with outboard engines and traditional canoes at the landing stage. Na Rejdě also has the traditional Na Rejdě fishermen’s hut, an exhibition about the Baťův Canal, toilets, showers and other visitor facilities. As rental availability and individual services may vary, it is advisable to check the latest information in advance.

Water areas and seasonal activities

Around Spytihněv, there are water areas created by gravel extraction, covering about 30 hectares, which can be used for swimming in summer. From spring to autumn, these same gravel-extraction water areas also offer opportunities for sport fishing. Swimming and fishing are therefore available during different periods. Before your trip, check the local rules and access arrangements for fishing; swimming conditions may also vary.

Church and cultural events

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was completed in 1712 and consecrated in 1740 by Bishop Jakub Arnošt of Liechtenstein. The dates mark two separate stages in its history: completion was followed by consecration. Inside is an artistically valuable main altarpiece by Ignác Raab.

The Slovácké hody s právem are among the annual highlights of cultural life in Spytihněv. They take place on the second Sunday in October; the specific programme may vary. If you are planning a trip around this date, the event is a separate consideration alongside seasonal activities on the water and boat trips.

If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Spytihněv, you can plan around your interests: settlement history and the church, the cycling route, or seasonal opportunities for swimming, fishing and boating. Check the timetable, accessibility and availability of the activities mentioned in advance to suit your plans.
