Kaňovice lies on the northwestern edge of the Vizovické vrchy hills. It is also home to the Chapel of Our Lady, Mediatrix of All Graces (Panna Maria Prostřednice všech milostí) and the Hrabinova farmstead, which is associated with traditional crafts and earthen architecture.

Landscape and route connections

The lowest point in Kaňovice is 240 metres above sea level, where the Černý potok stream leaves the municipal area in the direction of Biskupice. Its location on the edge of the Vizovické vrchy hills and this low-lying point by the stream provide two distinct geographical reference points. This makes it possible to situate the village both in relation to the hills and by reference to a specific point within the municipal area.

The cycling route is called “By Bike from Luhačovice to Uherský Brod” (“Na kole z Luhačovic do Uherského Brodu”). It runs from Luhačovice via Biskupice towards Kaňovice; at the Seče stop, it branches off towards Dobrkovice. If you include the route in your plans, check the route details beforehand, as they may change.

Local history and buildings

The historic centre of Kaňovice is registered as an archaeological finds area; a conservation area was also designated in 1994. These two features give the village centre distinct historical associations: archaeological finds on the one hand and heritage protection on the other. The Chapel of Our Lady, Mediatrix of All Graces (Panna Maria Prostřednice všech milostí) was built by local residents between 1951 and 1952. The foundation stone was blessed on 10 May 1951, and the shell of the building was completed within 14 days. The 14 days refer to the building shell, while 1951 to 1952 denotes the chapel’s construction period.

Crosses and wayside shrines are also local landmarks. They are located in the cemetery, by the chapel and along the roads towards Seče, Biskupice and Velký Ořechov. They thus complement the chapel as further named elements of local history, each at a different location.

Traditions kept alive

Kaňovice continues to observe the traditional Shrovetide masked procession (fašankový průvod masek), the Easter custom of “klepání” (velikonoční „klepání“), and the raising and felling of the maypole (stavění a kácení máje). The traditions thus include a masked procession, an Easter custom and a maypole ritual. If you are planning to visit specifically for one of these events, check the dates beforehand.

Hrabinova farmstead and crafts

The Hrabinova farmstead, known as Rolnická usedlost č.p. 19, is used to present and teach traditional historic crafts. In 2011, the farmstead received an international award for outstanding earthen architecture in Europe. The teaching of crafts and the award offer two different perspectives: the farmstead’s use is rooted in traditional trades, while the award recognises its architecture. If you are interested in either of these subjects, the farmstead could be a focus of its own on your trip.

According to a report dated 13 June 2025, a personal visit to the renovated Hrabinova farmstead can be arranged in advance through the municipal office. Contact the office before your arrival to ask about the current arrangements.
