If you are looking for a hotel in Lukov U Zlína, the castle, local history and trails of varying lengths can help you decide what to focus on during your stay. Hrad Lukov, cultural monuments and nature offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Hrad Lukov: history and visitor attractions

The origins of Hrad Lukov date back to the first third of the 13th century. Gradual heritage restoration began in 1987; in 2016, the castle was named Czech Monument of the Year. These milestones provide a historical context for a visit and also highlight the more recent history of its restoration.

Three educational trails have been created for visitors on the castle grounds. The “Hrad Lukov” educational trail runs through the upper part of the castle and explains the history and architectural development of the complex. The West Palace also houses an interactive exhibition about the 15th-century conquest of the castle, aimed especially at children. Educational programs at Hrad Lukov are also intended particularly for children and young people. As the availability of individual programs may change, check which activities are currently running before your visit.

A comparison of educational trails and circular routes

The “Hrad Lukov” educational trail is about 500 metres long on average and takes approximately 60 minutes. The Lukov educational trail offers a different scale: it is laid out as an 8-kilometre basic circular route or a 10.5-kilometre route with detours. Eight information panels along the trail describe natural features; the starting point is at Hájenka pod Růžovou. The different lengths can help you choose a route to match your preferred distance.

Another option is the “Z pověsti do pověsti” circular route: it is approximately 3 kilometres long and leads to ten stops featuring selected legends from Lukov. The green-marked Lukov educational trail passes through a rock cleft from the Brzová natural monument area to Hrad Lukov. Králky is a good starting point for hikes and exploring the surrounding area. The Cyril and Methodius Way section is also easy to place geographically: it begins in Lukov and ends in Zlín.

Natural monuments and landscape

The Králky natural monument is located in the cadastral area of Lukov u Zlína, approximately one kilometre northeast of Lukov. It protects distinctive rock formations made of Magura Flysch rocks. In the past, the formations also served as an outer fortification of Hrad Lukov. The Chladná dolina natural monument is also located in the cadastral area of Lukov u Zlína and protects forest calcareous tufa springs and a species-rich beech forest. At Králky, seats carved into the rock and a stone table are associated with a traditional story about a meeting in the early 19th century between young members of the Seilern count’s family from Lukov-Lešná and the Magnis family from Strážnice.

Bezedník is a natural monument and a stop on the educational trail through the Lukovský Forest. During the First Republic, the site served as a forest swimming area with a buffet, seating and boats. The Bělovodské ponds were restored in 1962 for recreation and fishing; they are also suitable for swimming and relaxation. Check local swimming conditions before you go. The Borovice u Bezedníku also stands near Bezedník: the Scots pine, approximately 100 to 150 years old, is more than 35 metres tall and towers above the surrounding woodland.

The Vela natural monument protects one of the last remnants of natural beech forest in the Hostýnské vrchy. Rock outcrops are visible there; the area and its wider surroundings are important nesting and refuge grounds for numerous bird species. Studánka Rybárka is a fissure spring emerging from a sandstone massif and is one of the most productive springs in the wider area. At the rocks below Hrad Lukov, fans of adrenaline sports can put their skills to the test.

Cultural monuments in Lukov

Construction of Kostel sv. Josefa began in 1810. The church has simple Empire architecture with elements inspired by the Baroque in their detailing. The altarpiece depicts the death of Saint Joseph and was painted by the Viennese artist A. Schilling. Boží muka, a Baroque wayside shrine at the crossroads of the roads to Lešná and Fryšták, offers a different point of interest. A sandstone statue of the Madonna stands on a brick pillar. The shrine was erected in 1660 by Jan Fridrich Minkvic z Minkvicburku, heir to Hrad Lukov.

Stará Lesovna also has a historical connection to the region: in the late 19th century, it was the residence of the wife of composer Bedřich Smetana. Along with the story associated with the seats and stone table at Králky, this site adds further cultural connections to the history of the castle and church. During your stay in Lukov U Zlína, you can therefore choose to focus on castle history, architecture, regional stories or nature.
