Valašské Klobouky: Town History and Landscape
Accommodation in Valašské Klobouky
Valašské Klobouky lies at the northern tip of the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. When planning your stay, the town’s history, textile heritage, and landscape offer distinct areas of interest. Historic buildings, exhibitions, and routes can help you match your interests to your stay.
Town History and Architecture
The urban conservation area was designated in 1995 and protects valuable architectural monuments in the historic town center. The town museum is housed in the Old Town Hall; directly in front of it stands a stone pillory from the 16th century, one of the oldest surviving pillories in the Czech Republic.
The core of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross dates back to the 1340s. The Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius was built in the Neo-Gothic style. The two church buildings therefore highlight different features: the age of the church’s core and its architectural style.
Josef Bratmann’s house was designed by Hubert Gessner in 1895. The Bratmann Villa was also designed by Gessner and is one of the first new buildings in Valašské Klobouky after the fire of 1896. The time periods represented thus range from the medieval church core to Gessner’s designs and the early construction phase following the fire.
Textile History and Exhibitions
Červený dům is the second building of the town museum. Its exhibition covers cloth-making, as well as linen production and dyeing. Soukenická jizba houses a working loom; whether demonstrations take place may vary from one visit to another.
Two complementary exhibitions focus on the architecture of Hubert Gessner. The first is in the town museum, in the Old Town Hall building on the square. Opening arrangements may vary seasonally; check current visiting hours before your visit.
Landscape and Routes
Valašské Klobouky lies in a valley basin surrounded by hills. Above the town, on the ridge between the peaks of Královec and Požár, is Ščúrnica, a unique old-growth fir and beech forest. The landscape description thus includes both the town’s valley setting and a forest on the ridge above it.
The Bevlava Cycle Route includes a section from Valašské Klobouky via Brumov-Bylnice to Svatý Štěpán. A cross-border educational cycling route with a total length of 35 km also starts in Valašské Klobouky. There is also a 7 km circular route in the surrounding area. These details offer different points of reference: a route through several towns, a total distance, or the shorter circular route. Before setting off, it is advisable to check current route conditions and signage.
Seasonal Outdoor Pool and Local Products
The Valašské Klobouky outdoor pool has a swimming pool for adults, a children’s pool with two slides, and a children’s paddling pool. It operates seasonally, and its facilities may change; check the latest operating information before your visit.
Moštuj is a cider mill in Valašské Klobouky that makes apple juices, including flavored varieties.
