If you are considering Kelč as a destination for a hotel stay, its different highlights can help you choose where to go: the nature trail comprises two circular routes for walking and cycling. The historic preservation zone, church, museum and bridge offer further points of interest in the town’s cultural history. The routes differ mainly in their course: the short loop passes through the town’s urban heritage or historic preservation zone, while the long loop follows significant landscape features in the area around the town.

Nature Trail and Cycling Routes

Both circular routes on the Kelč nature trail can be explored on foot or by bicycle. The short loop focuses on the route through the town’s historic preservation zone, while the long loop follows significant landscape features in the area around Kelč. The two options therefore differ in whether they take you through the town or into the nearby countryside.

Another option for cyclists is the “Na Kelečský zámek z Valmezu” route. It passes through Kelč and is suitable for e-bikes, gravel bikes and mountain bikes. The route includes a stop in Kelč to see the square. When choosing a route, you can therefore distinguish between the two loops on the nature trail and a described cycling route with a scheduled sightseeing stop.

Historic Preservation Zone and Château

Kelč’s historic preservation zone includes the centre of the New Town and the Renaissance château complex with a landscaped park. The square known as Náměstí is also part of the zone. The square is home to the birthplaces of linguist and Slavist František Pastrnek and Moravian Enlightenment thinker and writer Tomáš Fryčaj. These places give your visit a tangible connection to the town’s history, without requiring a longer walk.

Kelč Fortress was converted into a Renaissance château in the 1580s. The château is currently not open to the public, so take this restriction into account when planning your visit. Nevertheless, the complex and its landscaped park are among the described features of the historic preservation zone. It is therefore important to distinguish between the site’s historical significance and current access to the château.

Church and Museum

The Church of St Catherine (sv. Kateřiny) is used for religious services and concerts. Its medieval origins are documented, and it has been a protected monument since 10 February 1992. Its history and present-day use come together here: the church is both a historic site and a venue for services and concerts.

Kelč Museum is located in the former old school building at Kelč 290. It contains a room dedicated to the Křička siblings and the permanent exhibition “Po stopách kelečského dýmkařství” on pipe-making. Museum visits must be arranged by telephone only and at least one day in advance. Be sure to plan your visit with sufficient notice.

A Special Bridge

Other historical details include Kelč Bridge, dating from 1912. Described as an original stone bridge, it is decorated with four pylons and hemispheres and is one of the few surviving concrete bridges in the region. Its date, distinctive decorative features and status as a surviving concrete bridge make it a point of interest in its own right if you are interested in the town’s architectural history.
