Dešná: Forest Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Dešná
Dešná combines a wooded setting in the Přírodní park Vizovické vrchy Nature Park with characteristic wooden houses and archaeological sites. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether you are primarily interested in the natural surroundings or the area’s architecture and history.
Forest Landscape and Cycling Route
Dešná is set in a wooded landscape in the Přírodní park Vizovické vrchy Nature Park. Dešná covers 216 hectares, about half of which is forested. The nature park provides regional context for the area, while the proportion of forest gives a concrete impression of the landscape. There is also a point of reference for cycling visitors: long-distance cycling route No. 46 runs north to south through the Dešná area. The route number and direction help you understand its course and add a specific cycling route to the landscape perspective.
Regional Architecture in Dešná
Several traditional wooden houses have been preserved in Dešná; this style of construction is characteristic of the Valašsko region. The rural house at No. 15 in Dešná is listed as an immovable cultural monument in the state heritage register. It has a hipped roof with clipped gable ends and a covering of beaver-tail tiles. These terms distinguish the form from the materials: the hipped roof and clipped gable ends describe the roof shape, while the beaver-tail tiles describe its covering. Alongside the traditional wooden houses, house No. 15 provides a specifically identified example of regional architecture.
Archaeological Sites and Finds
The Hrádek archaeological site is located in the Dešná area. It was a fortified hilltop settlement of the Púchov culture dating from the late La Tène period, that is, from the end of the 1st century BC. Investigations in 1987 uncovered a stone axe, pottery and iron objects; a forge shovel was considered the most significant find. Deposits of iron objects were also discovered at Hrádek. Archaeological research at Hrádek, between Všemina and Dešná, confirmed settlement by the Púchov culture and uncovered traces of a palisade made of posts. The palisade was apparently destroyed by fire. The evidence ranges from individual objects to traces of the fortified settlement itself.
The Zlatná site, also known as Zlatnice, also includes a settlement of the same culture. Celtic gold coins were found there. Their number is estimated at 12 to 20; currently, only three can be identified. The estimate refers to the presumed number of finds, while the figure of three refers to coins that can currently be identified. The two figures therefore describe different aspects of the history of the finds: an estimated total and a portion that can currently be attributed.
The Memorial Cross at Na kopci
A wooden memorial cross stands at Na kopci. Its elevated position was chosen deliberately so that it can be seen from a distance. The cross is located at a symbolic crossroads; in the past, it marked the entrance to the Všemina area. This former function is part of the area’s history, while the memorial cross remains a specific landmark at Na kopci.
