History of Karlovice

The medieval settlement of Pěnkov is documented from 1368; Karlovice was established on its land. On October 23, 1768, Count Karel Vincenc Salm-Neuburg decided to found Karlovice on the site of the former manor farm of Pěnkov. At the time, he owned the Malenovice estate. The history and founding of Karlovice therefore lead back to two distinct historical milestones: Pěnkov, documented as a medieval settlement, and the decision made in the 18th century.

The Chapel of Panny Marie Matky dobré rady is also connected with the history of the village. The sisters Anežka, Barbora and Františka Gorgoňovy were its principal benefactors. They also commissioned the chapel’s main image of the Virgin Mary.

Monuments and Memorial Sites

In the upper part of Karlovice, known as Pěnkov, a sandstone cross stands on the left side of the road toward the farm. A black commemorative plaque is located at the Karlovice cross for those who fell in the First World War. It honors Jan Mikeštík, who died in the anti-fascist resistance.

A stone monument to the first mayor stands on the main road from the crossroads toward Svatá voda: on the right-hand side, at the beginning of a bend. Another monument is located in the lower part of Karlovice, behind the fire station and municipal office.

Landscape and Local Traditions

Karlovice lies in the forests between Malenovice and Oldřichovice. The notable tree Žižkův dub stands at the edge of Karlovice’s cadastral area, which borders the cadastral area of Oldřichovice. According to local tradition, Hussites camped by Žižkův dub during the siege of Malenovice Castle.

Another long-standing tradition is Vodění medvěda. It has been held in Karlovice for decades and is maintained by members of the volunteer fire brigade. Unlike the memorial sites associated with specific people and the history of the village, Vodění medvěda is one of the recurring local customs.

Marked Trails and Routes

The marked trail network Stezky napajedelských emirátů covers 70 km and connects Napajedla with Karlovice and other nearby municipalities. It is intended for hikers and mountain bikers. Another route detail concerns the yellow-marked section of the Cyrilometodějská trail: it runs from the spring at Svatá voda to Karlovice.

A route description for the hiking trail from Napajedla via Svatá voda to Malenovice places Karlovice at 8.7 km and Svatá voda at 10.1 km. These distances refer to the route described. The information therefore offers several different ways to orient yourself: the total length of a trail network, a yellow-marked section, and distances along a specific hiking trail. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Svatá voda–Malenovice Nearby

The pilgrimage site of Svatá voda–Malenovice is located near Karlovice. It includes a well covered by a stone vault and a rock cave with a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes. The site is another local point of interest, complementing the historical landmarks and trails.
