When searching for a hotel in Bolevec, natural areas, paths along the ponds and cultural monuments can shape your travel plans. These destinations offer different points of interest: protected landscapes, marked trails with stated lengths, and historic sites that provide insights into past ways of working and living.

Natural Areas and Pond Landscape

The Petrovka Nature Reserve encompasses the valley of the Bolevecký potok stream west of the Plzeň–Ledce road, as well as adjoining southern slopes with pine stands and geomorphological features. It protects a pine ecosystem with the genetic stock of a local Scots pine ecotype. Other protected landscape features include one of the oldest peat bogs in the Plzeň Region, wet meadows, and numerous protected or endangered species.

Another natural attraction in Bolevec is the Kamenný rybník Nature Reserve, where 165 species of higher plants have been recorded. The Bolevecké rybniční soustavu on the northern outskirts of Plzeň consists of ten ponds. In summer, the Bolevecké rybníky are used for swimming, giving the landscape a seasonal recreational appeal in addition to its natural value.

Marked Trails and Excursions

The Olympijský okruh runs around Velký Bolevecký rybník, is four kilometres long and marked in blue, and is considered less challenging. The Kolem rybníků trail is five kilometres long, marked in red and more challenging. The routes therefore differ both in length and in their stated level of difficulty. Kolem rybníků starts either at the terminus of tram line 1 or at the car park by Plzeň-Bolevec railway station.

Both hiking trails along the Bolevecké rybníky are signposted with information boards and are suitable for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users. Check trail conditions before your outing; if you plan to take Kolem rybníků, it is also worth checking traffic information for the stated starting points.

The Spejbl and Hurvínek adventure trail is 5.5 kilometres long and both starts and ends at Šídlovský rybník. Its ten stations offer activities for children and adults. More than 60 different pine species from around the world grow at the Sofronka Arboretum. The arboretum also offers forest education activities; visitors can observe fallow deer in a woodland enclosure from two viewing platforms.

Technology and Rural Architecture

The Kolomazná pec is an important technical monument dating from the mid-18th century, located in the Bolevec peat bog area. It recalls the production of tar and other products by the dry distillation of wood and is considered the best-preserved tar kiln complex in the Czech Republic. As part of the Sigmondova naučná stezka educational trail, it illustrates the historic processing of natural resources.

The U Matoušů open-air museum in Plzeň-Bolevec is a national cultural monument. It documents the development of rural vernacular architecture and ways of life in the Plzeň Region from the 18th to the 20th century. The farmstead includes a large residential building, stables, a two-storey masonry granary and a large barn; the preserved buildings are predominantly of Neoclassical origin. The farmstead is part of the Bolevec village conservation area. Free-access exhibitions are on display in the granary and barn.
