If you are looking for a culturally rich destination for your trip, Šťáhlavy offers several distinct themes: château architecture, historic parks, archaeological traces and a remarkable feature of its organ. The details range from architectural history to garden design, giving you concrete points of reference for choosing the focus that interests you most.

Kozel Chateau and its parkland

The Neoclassical hunting lodge Kozel was built in the late 18th century under the direction of master builder Václav Haberditz for its patron, Jan Vojtěch Černín. Both the patron and the master builder are part of the château’s architectural history; at the same time, its classification as a Neoclassical hunting lodge shapes its character. The setting is a spacious landscaped park. Its present-day appearance was shaped by gardener František Xaver Franz in the 1870s. The building and the park thus represent different periods: the château’s construction in the late 18th century and the defining garden design of the following century. If you are equally interested in architecture and garden art, you can explore these aspects separately.

The entire Kozel Chateau grounds and all visitor areas are wheelchair accessible. If you rely on this accessibility, please confirm it again before your visit.

Trails and archaeological traces

The Okolo Kozlu educational trail starts at the edge of the forest by Lopatský Pond below Kozel Chateau and ends at the tourist signpost above the upper château gate. The pond, forest edge and château gate are specific landmarks along the route described. This lets you identify the trail by its start and end points.

The ruins of Lopata Castle lead back to an earlier history: Heřman of Litice is believed to have founded the castle between 1367 and 1377 on the site of a prehistoric settlement. The ruins are currently part of the F. X. France educational trail. The archaeological trail in Kozelské polesí also commemorates F. X. France. France was an important amateur archaeologist of the 19th century and a gardener at Kozel Chateau. This theme thus brings together the history of a castle site and the memory of a person whose work connected archaeology and château gardening.

Šťáhlavy Chateau and the Church of St Adalbert

Šťáhlavy Chateau represents a different architectural focus: it is an example of a rural Renaissance building altered by Baroque additions. The château grounds include a park. In comparison with Kozel, you encounter two different architectural histories: here, a Renaissance building with Baroque alterations; there, a Neoclassical hunting lodge from the late 18th century. The comparison makes the different styles and phases of development of the two château complexes tangible.

An organ by organ builder Ferdinand Guth of Čistá was installed in 1856 in the Church of St Adalbert in Šťáhlavy. The position of its largest pipes is particularly noteworthy: because of the low ceiling above the choir, they lie horizontally beneath the choir floor. This arrangement is considered unique in the world. For those interested in music and craftsmanship, the organ’s appeal lies not only in its year of construction or the name of its builder, but also in the technical solution adapted to the spatial conditions in the choir.
