Guldborgsund Municipality: Discover the coast, nature and culture
Accommodation in Guldborgsund Municipality
Guldborgsund Municipality is defined by its coastal and natural landscapes, as well as its museums, historic experiences and water-based activities. The municipality has 274 km of coastline and 21 beaches with bathing water profiles. If swimming is part of your plans, check local conditions.
Experience the coastal landscape and nature
The Bøtø Nor bird sanctuary is a protected wetland with meadows, reed beds and small lakes. It is a good place to observe wading birds, geese, ducks, birds of prey and cranes. Two birdwatching towers offer views across the sanctuary; there is also a birdwatching hide at Bøtø Enge.
The approximately 15 km-long “Spor Bøtø Nor” walking trail leads into the wetland and can be accessed from five different car parks. You can factor its length and access points into your excursion plans.
Skejten offers a different landscape: this flat, rugged natural area has never been used for agriculture. Rare animal and plant species, large Ice Age boulders and old, thick-trunked oak trees define the area. On the Fuglsang and Skejten walking trail, expect uneven, often wet paths. Primitive bridges cross streams that flow through the area and into the Guldborgsund.
If you want to explore the region by bike, the Sundruten is a scenic 44 km route around Guldborgsund. It passes through forests and estate landscapes, offering two distinct landscape impressions along the way.
History, museums and culture
At Middelaldercentret, the centrepiece is Sundkøbing, a reconstructed Danish town from the 15th century. This historical experience centre features medieval crafts, merchants, knight tournaments and demonstrations of medieval weapons. These different elements give visitors a glimpse of urban life and the kinds of demonstrations that define the centre.
In Eskilstrup, Danmarks Traktormuseum explores the history of agriculture and technology. Its collection includes an almost complete collection of Danish Bukh tractors, other tractor collections and stationary Bukh engines from 1925 to 1937. In Nykøbing F., Den gamle Købmandshandel is a living museum built around the authentic furnishings and stock of the Skottemarke Købmandshandel, which closed in 1987.
Nykøbing Falster Revyen is also part of the municipality’s cultural scene. Its performances are humorous and satirical, and it is one of Denmark’s longest-running revues. The programme and cast change from season to season. The “I Dronning Sophies Fodspor” walk takes you through the historic streets of Nykøbing Falster. If you plan to follow it, check the current route beforehand.
Museum Obscurum is about a ten-minute walk from Nykøbing Falster railway station. If you are travelling by train, include current connections in your plans. This lets you coordinate your museum visit with your journey without relying on any particular connection.
Water-based activities and animal encounters
In Nykøbing Falster, Guldborgsund Aqua Sport operates a cable system for wakeboarding and gives beginners a thorough introduction. Operating arrangements can vary by season, so contact the provider in advance if you are planning a specific visit. Fishing is also an option along the coast and in open public waterways. Target species include sea trout and grey mullet. The municipality has more than 500 km of these waterways; local conditions and regulations may vary.
At Pangea Park Falster, you can see kangaroos, monkeys, giant tortoises, ponies, donkeys and goats up close. Animal populations can change, so check which encounters are currently available before your visit. At Krokodille Zoo, you can see crocodiles outdoors during the summer months. Tayras, clouded leopards and pumas live there in naturalistic environments.
