Gedser – Hotels at Denmark’s Southernmost Point
Accommodation in Gedser
Gedser Odde is the southernmost point of Denmark. The headland gives Gedser a clear geographical identity, while nature observation and coastal landscapes take centre stage. A hotel stay also offers different ways to discover the area: migratory birds, historic railways and geological finds.
Nature observation at Gedser Odde
In spring and autumn, tens of thousands of migratory birds can be observed at Gedser’s southern tip. These two seasons set the distinctive rhythm for nature observation. The Gedser Bird Observatory offers bird walks at Gedser Odde, as well as information about birds and the work of the observatory. The observatory rings birds mainly in the lighthouse garden by the observatory, and also at places including Vesterhave. The nature theme therefore ranges from visible bird migration to the work behind the observations.
Another notable landmark is Sydstenen. The erratic boulder weighs about four tonnes and is thought to be one billion years old. It comes from Sweden and was transported to southern Falster by ice sheets about 15,000 years ago. Two different timescales meet here: the stone’s estimated geological age and its much later transport by ice.
The lighthouse and routes to the headland
Gedser Fyr was completed in 1801 and began operating in 1802. From Gedser, you can walk along the beach to the lighthouse. By car, you can reach Gedser Odde via the E55; from Gedser, the access road follows Langgade and Gedser Fyrvej to the lighthouse and headland. The beach walk to the lighthouse and the drive via Langgade and Gedser Fyrvej offer different ways to approach Denmark’s southern tip.
For bus travel, Movia route 740 from Nykøbing F. towards Gedser Færge stops at Torvet in Gedser. Check the current timetable before travelling, as bus services may change.
Railway history at Gedser Remise
Gedser Remise is a railway museum offering a glimpse into the golden age of railways. Visitors can see historic locomotives and railway carriages, and experience authentic working environments in the old engine shed buildings. The Gule Palæ adds a connection to film history: it is a museum housed in a former command post featured in the Olsen Gang film “Olsenbanden på Sporet”.
Train rides are also part of the railway experience. The Remise Express offers circular tours through Gedser as well as bookable tours in the local area. In summer and during the Easter holidays, Gedser Remise also runs historic trains between Nykøbing F and Gedser Remise. As these train services are seasonal, check the current departure calendar before travelling.
Other perspectives on Gedser
The Sorte Geomuseum displays fossils, minerals and amber. For a different kind of view, Gedser Vandtårn offers wide-ranging views over Denmark’s southern tip, the town of Gedser, the ferry port, the marina, and the surrounding area and nature.
KLANG KØSTEN was inaugurated on Sunday, 28 June 2026, as an artistic audio trail in Gedser. Through a free app, the five-kilometre route to Denmark’s southernmost point presented stories and local voices. Before making plans, check whether the experience is currently available.
