Stubbekøbing: Harbour, Old Town and Culture
Accommodation in Stubbekøbing
Stubbekøbing brings together the harbour on the Grønsund with an old town whose history is reflected in its streets, buildings and historic sites. For planning your trip, you can focus on different themes: ferry services, architecture, museums and routes through green spaces.
Harbour and ferry connection
Every summer, the IDA ferry crosses the Grønsund between Bogø and Stubbekøbing. It carries people, bicycles, cars, motorcycles and buses, and can accommodate 98 passengers and 12 cars. Seasonal sailing times vary from year to year, so check the timetable for your travel dates.
At the ferry terminal in the harbour, Udsigtstrappen offers views of the Grønsund and Bogø. The marina is also part of the harbour scene, with facilities for sailors. These may change over time, so check the latest information if you need specific facilities.
Old town and architectural history
A town tour can begin at Torvet by the old church. Two streets run parallel through the old town and are connected by cross streets. The old town hall is also located at Torvet in the town centre. It was the seat of the Stubbekøbing Municipality and is now used as a cultural centre.
The medieval town church was built from chalk stone blocks in the form of a basilica: its nave is flanked by two aisles. On the north side of the church nave is Sct. Annas kapel, considered one of Denmark’s finest Gothic buildings. The church is part of the Church Route.
Traces of the town’s earlier history can also be explored. Around the year 1000, Ledingshavn, a fjord harbour where Viking ships gathered, lay south of the old centre. Dikes and land reclamation have made the historic site difficult to find. Stampen was a watermill at the mouth of the Fribrødre Å, at the end of Møllegade; the Stampen Mill can now be seen from Orevej.
Art, museum and festival
KUNST-Doseringen is located in the historic fish factory at Stubbekøbing harbour. The exhibition platform showcases professional artists connected to the Storstrøm cultural region. It hosts exhibitions, events, workshops and artist talks. The programme and visitor arrangements may change, so check what’s currently on offer before visiting.
The Danmarks Motorcykelmuseum exhibition features more than 200 motorcycles, including 11 Danish models. Its size and composition may change as exhibits are added or removed. The radio section offers a glimpse into the electronic developments of the 20th century. Among the exhibits is a Magnavox, described as the world’s first loudspeaker; the availability of individual exhibits may change.
The Kun Forrykte Festival has been held in Stubbekøbing since 2019. This two-day event features rock and folk music. For 2027, it has been announced for the town park on North Falster. If you’re planning your trip around the festival, check the details for the announced edition.
Walks and cycle routes
In Anlæg, paths wind between tall, old beech trees and open lawns. The park has two small lakes, one of which is heart-shaped, and offers views of the Grønsund. On a walk along Havnegade, you can spot lamp posts decorated with motifs of the IDA ferry and the town’s motorcycles, as well as distinctive drain covers.
For a longer bike ride, the 30-kilometre “Fra købstad til fiskerleje” route starts and ends at Stubbekøbing harbour. Its markers feature symbols that you can follow by looking for a fish. The cycle route from Stubbekøbing to Rødbyhavn is also signposted. As route details can change, check the latest information before setting out.
