Discover Rebild: Heathland, trails and culture
Accommodation in Rebild
Exploring Rebild offers a chance to focus on nature, outdoor activities and culture. Rebild Bakker is a hilly heathland landscape; trails, lakes, springs and museums provide a range of options for planning your trip.
Heathland, forests and water
Rebild Bakker features steep slopes, scenic viewpoints, springs and streams. The forests each have their own character, too: Troldeskoven is home to gnarled beech trees, the oldest of which are more than 300 years old. More than 150 different species of trees and shrubs grow in Den Jyske Skovhave. Rold Skov offers numerous marked hiking and running trails, as well as forests, lakes, springs and streams.
A marked circular trail runs around Madum Sø, and a footpath also leads to Langmosen. Access is from a car park overlooking the water. During bird migration, ospreys may visit the lake and feed on pike and perch—a possible sighting, not a guarantee for any particular day.
The springs also have distinct features. Store Blåkilde is protected and should be viewed from the bank. Its almost oval basin measures about 12 metres at its widest point and is four to five metres deep. Lille Blåkilde carries about 90 litres of water per second and drains an area of 10 to 12 square kilometres.
Hiking, swimming and seasonal trails
The 5.1-kilometre Røverruten is certified by the German Hiking Institute as a Premium Easy Hiking Trail. Five large wooden figures along the route are inspired by the forest’s history and legends. The Rebild Bakker Ruten is 10.8 kilometres long. At 11.8 kilometres, the Gravlev Ådal Ruten is one kilometre longer; it connects REGAN Vest, Rebildcentret and Thingbæk Kalkminer with Gravlev Sø and Rebild Bakker and is certified as a Premium Hiking Trail. The 76-metre-long Skillingbro Undervejsbro is on this route and connects the area around REGAN Vest and the limestone mines with the landscape around Gravlev Sø and in Rebild Bakker. Check current access conditions before setting out.
Store Økssø has two swimming beaches, a bathing jetty and a marked 1,570-metre swimming course. A 2.7-kilometre route there is suitable for wheelchairs, prams and similar use. If you have specific requirements, check the route again before your trip.
Cross-country skiing in winter is subject to one clear condition: when there is enough snow, Rold Skov has a two-part ski trail. This includes a 13-kilometre section between Skørping and Rebild and a 2.3-kilometre training loop south of Skørping School. Another activity is the 24-timers MTB-ruten, a 17-kilometre mountain bike route on singletrack sections; route conditions and classification may change.
Museums and Danish-American tradition
Museum Rebild has an exhibition about Danish emigration to America from 1850 to 1920. Its extensive folk music collection includes instruments, dances, songs and folk music. The programme also includes a continuing dance tradition: traditional dancing has taken place there on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 5 pm since 1951, and Gammeldans still takes place every Sunday.
Rebildfesten has been a Danish-American tradition since 1912. Every year around 4 July, Danes, Americans, Danish-American guests and other visitors gather in Rebild Bakker for a day of speeches, music, community and cultural performances. The programme and access arrangements vary from year to year; check the event dates before making plans.
Koldkrigsmuseum REGAN Vest preserves a fully furnished Cold War bunker covering 5,500 square metres, with its original interior intact. It can only be visited as part of a guided tour booked in advance. Rebildcentret has a 700-square-metre exhibition about the Cold War open to visitors. The exhibitions also cover the region’s sculptors, limestone and springs; Thingbæk Kalkminer contains sculptures by Anders Bundgaard and Carl Johan Bonnesen. If you have specific accessibility requirements: an accessible path leads from the car park to Rebildcentret’s reception, and paths connect the exhibition buildings and the limestone mines.
