Støvring: Nature Trails, Lakes and Local History
Accommodation in Støvring
In Støvring, nature experiences and local history offer distinct themes for your stay. By the lakes and along the trails, you can choose routes with clearly specified lengths or landscape features. The museum and church offer a different insight into the town’s history. So the places you plan to visit may also depend on whether you prefer a walk, nature observation or historical topics.
Nature at Juelstrup Sø and the Mastrup Lakes
Juelstrup Sø is a natural area near Støvring. A marked gravel path, benches and views of the lake shape the visit. At the nature base by Juelstrup Sø, there is a picnic shelter, a toilet, tables and benches, as well as fire pits with grill grates. A simple overnight camping spot is right next to it. The site therefore combines natural scenery with practical facilities for an outdoor break.
The nature around the lake also has several facets: Juelstrup Sø is home to a rich and varied birdlife. In Cirkelskoven, next to the nature base, 25 different species of trees and shrubs grow. When planning your time there, you can focus on the views of the water, the birdlife or the woodland.
The Mastrup Lakes are another destination for nature lovers and walkers. This recreational nature area is close to town and comprises four lakes, with trails and views of the water. The lakeside landscape is therefore more than just a number of lakes: the trails and changing views of the water are also part of what makes the place distinctive.
Trails and routes for different plans
Hjertesti 1 – Støvring is a 3.15 km circular route around the Mastrup Lakes and Støvring Multihus. It is suitable for a short everyday walk close to town. Important for planning: the route is not wheelchair accessible and is not suitable for pushchairs. Bear these restrictions in mind when choosing a suitable route.
At 5.6 km, Hjertesti 2 – Støvring is longer and runs along Mastrup Bæk. This nature trail is more hilly. The two Hjertestier therefore differ not only in their stated lengths, but also in how their routes are described: the first is defined by its circular route and proximity to town, while the second follows the stream and has a hilly profile.
Another trail links the village of Sørup with Juelstrup Sø: Wittrup Sporet is part of Spor i Landskabet. Together with the trails around the Mastrup Lakes, it offers a different way to explore the area than a circular route with a specified length. You can see which description better suits your plans by looking at the respective destinations and route features.
Støvring Hundeskov has a fenced dog exercise area of approximately 10 hectares. Its network of paths covers approximately 5 km. These approximate figures for the area and paths help you gauge the size of this destination without confusing the two measurements. Another distinctive nature feature is Himmelhunden: the dog-shaped planting echoes the dog motif of the Danish Nature Agency’s pictogram.
Støvring’s history at the museum and church
Støvring Museum is located in the old folk high school building on Hobrovej in Støvring. It displays historical objects from the local area. Støvring Museumsforening presents and shares around 150 years of Støvring’s history, from farming village to industrial town. This development gives a visit to the museum its own historical context and distinguishes it from the natural attractions in the surrounding area.
Visiting hours at Støvring Museum are listed as Saturdays from 10:00 to 12:00, as well as visits by appointment with a member of the board. Check these times before your visit. This lets you plan your museum visit carefully rather than assume that the listed hours are confirmed current opening hours.
At Støvring Church, some furnishings come from the medieval parish church; however, the larger furnishings date from the 20th century. This distinction is important for understanding the church: some of its furnishings are medieval in origin, while the larger pieces belong to a later period. The museum and church thus offer different perspectives on Støvring’s history.
