In Bælum, natural places, cycling and hiking routes, and local history can be explored as distinct themes. Solpletten and Bælum Kildesø offer different connections with nature; Bælum Kirke and Bælum Mølle offer architectural details and insights into local history. When planning your trip, you can first consider which focus you want to shape your stay. This helps you tailor your search for a hotel in Bælum to the activities and sights that interest you most.

Solpletten and Hadsundbanen

Solpletten is an open ecological garden on the Hadsundbanen cycling route. It is located on the grounds behind the former Solbjerg sawmill in Bælum. Sculptures, a labyrinth, fruit trees, and berry bushes are among the garden’s features. People and animals are free to eat the fruit and berries. If you plan to visit the garden, check the local conditions before your visit.

Picnicking and making a fire are possible at Solpletten; staying overnight in a tent is also possible. It is free of charge, but requires an arrangement in advance. Cars are not recommended at Solpletten; access is via the cycling route. So, if you are planning to stay in a tent, arranging this in advance is especially important.

Hadsundbanen is a combined cycling and hiking route along a former railway line and passes through Bælum. The route connects the garden with the cycling and hiking network, while Solpletten’s design, with its labyrinth, sculptures, and fruit trees and bushes, makes it a destination in its own right.

Nature at Bælum Kildesø

Bælum Kildesø is in Bælum Sønderskov, southwest of Bælum. You can enjoy the view across the lake from the benches. Children and adults can also explore nature there with nets and rubber boots. In winter, the lake is often used as a skating rink, weather conditions permitting. The activities therefore have different focuses: exploring with a net and rubber boots, on the one hand, and ice skating, which is explicitly dependent on conditions, on the other.

Local history: church and mill

Bælum Kirke dates from around 1200 and is a medieval church built of granite blocks. On the south side of the chancel is a chapel dating from 1616, associated with Anne Krabbe, the widow of Erik Kaas. The chapel contains a gravestone for Erik Kaas and his two wives, Berete Seefeld and Anne Krabbe. South of the church, between the porch and the chapel, there is also a Romanesque gravestone with carved lines and a cross.

The architectural and burial details offer tangible points of connection to the church’s history: alongside the medieval church are the 17th-century chapel and the burial sites associated with it. Bælum Mølle offers a different perspective. It stands on Præstens Høj, one of the two highest points in the municipality of Bælum, about 60 metres above sea level, and offers insights into local history and milling heritage.

Cycling connections for your trip planning

The named cycling routes also point to different destinations. From Bælum, cyclists can follow cycling route 5 through Lille Vildmose. Cycling route 27 leads west to Rold Skov. The two descriptions differ in both route number and the direction and destination given. Bælum campsite is on the cycling route along the former Hadsund railway line and between Bælum and Solbjerg on national cycling route 5.

If you are looking for a hotel in Bælum, you can decide on your focus in advance: cycling and hiking routes, nature by the lake, or local history each offer a different theme for planning your trip.
