Discover Gammel Skørping
Accommodation in Gammel Skørping
When choosing a destination, Gammel Skørping offers a clearly defined village layout, distinctive surrounding farmland, and cultural and historical points of interest. The old village has a well-preserved village green in the centre; the village pond lies a little to the west. This gives you two distinct reference points for orienting yourself in the village: the green at its centre and the pond to the west.
Village layout and landscape
The term “star village” is also part of the local character: the field boundaries radiate out from the village in a star shape. This describes the farmland beyond the village centre, while the village green marks the central area. The Otterupmosegrøft runs around Gammel Skørping to the south and west. For orientation, these features can be distinguished by their form: the green and pond mark points in the village, while the field boundaries and ditch describe lines and routes through the landscape.
Routes and views
The black Kløverrute, also known as Gl. Skørpingstien, passes through Gammel Skørping and goes by Hanehøj, among other places. Hanehøj is situated on high ground and offers good views in every direction. This gives the route description a specific point of reference: alongside the route through the village, the viewpoint is a distinctive feature. If you consider views when choosing a route, you can use Hanehøj as a landmark.
Cykelrute 3 runs from Støvring through Gammel Skørping and on to Volsted. It follows smaller roads and long stretches of cycle paths through very beautiful countryside. This information helps you understand the route and its character. You can therefore choose between different features when planning a route: Hanehøj and its panoramic views on the black Kløverrute, or the sequence of villages and surface conditions on Cykelrute 3.
Traditions and church history
The Maj-Bøg Festival is a tradition in Gammel Skørping that is more than 100 years old. It takes place on Whitsun Saturday, when the Maj-Bøg pole is erected. The custom gives the festival a specific focal point: the erection of the pole on the stated holiday.
The 2021 community profile describes Butikken as a frequent venue for music events that attract people from a wide surrounding area. The programme may change. For planning purposes, you can distinguish between the two: the Maj-Bøg Festival is held on Whitsun Saturday; check the current dates for music events at Butikken if you would like to plan your visit around them.
Gl. Skørping Church was known as a pilgrimage church. A spring runs beneath the chapel floor and feeds the “Helligkorskilden” well in the churchyard. The church’s history therefore includes both its former significance as a place of pilgrimage and the location of this spring. There is a place to park on the way to Gammel Skørping Church; check the current parking situation before you arrive.
