Brønderslev: Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Brønderslev
Brønderslev reveals different sides of itself, from an Ice Age-formed ridge and a protected moorland to buildings steeped in cultural history. Jyske Ås offers varied natural scenery and outdoor trails, while museums and a castle provide insights into regional history, technology and art. When planning your trip, you can decide what to focus on: hiking, observing nature, viewing collections or experiencing seasonal events.
Landscape and trails
Jyske Ås was formed by glacial processes during the last Ice Age. The ridge is more than two kilometres wide and stretches 38 kilometres from Dronninglund to Østervrå. Its landscape includes fields, heaths, moors and forests, as well as rich flora and fauna. Signposted walking and cycling routes and primitive campsites add to the outdoor experiences. The landscape is therefore well suited to a range of outdoor plans, from hiking to cycling.
Dronninglund Storskov covers 961 hectares. You can hike and cycle here, and there is also a signposted bridle path. A riding permit is required to use it. Ten signposted nature and interpretation trails are spread across Brønderslev Municipality. They offer another way to include nature experiences and interpretation in your plans.
Moorland, birdlife and nature breaks
Store Vildmose is a protected 450-hectare remnant of a former raised bog, once considered the largest raised bog in Europe. Today, you can hike and cycle there and visit the Vildmoseporten local history and visitor centre. Birdlife is also part of the nature experience: you can observe the rich variety of birds from a Nature Agency observation tower on Manna Mosevej. As birdwatching is seasonal, the time of year may matter if this is a priority.
At Sømosen, there is a car park, a circular trail, and tables and benches for a picnic break. This makes it easy to combine a visit with a stop along the way. If you would like to combine nature and culture, Dronninglund Art Centre offers changing art experiences, a gallery shop and a small café. The art centre is located in a natural area near Dronninglund Storskov.
Castles, museums and local stories
Voergaard Castle has a dungeon, a moat and the story of the bloodstain that cannot be washed away. Guided tours showcase works of art and share stories; tour availability varies by season. Hjallerup Mechanical Museum offers an introduction to a different chapter: the development of agricultural mechanisation and the arrival of industry in Denmark during the 20th century. Exhibits include tractors, cars, engines, motorcycles, agricultural machinery and other mechanical equipment.
The Museum of Utilities and Sustainability is a state-recognised cultural history museum. It tells the story of life in Vildmosen and on Jyske Ås. Dorf Møllegård offers a different focus, with changing exhibitions on regional history and events throughout the year, including talks, holiday activities for children and Hestedag. The programme varies throughout the year.
The museums also cover different periods. The Psychiatric History Museum traces history from the earliest prehistoric times through the Middle Ages and the Enlightenment to the era of state-run psychiatric healthcare and more recent times. The Østvendsyssel Local History Collection explores the history of Østvendsyssel from the Stone Age to the mid-20th century. Høstdagen is held there every year as an established tradition; dates vary from year to year.
Gardens, activities and coast
Rhododendronparken is home to more than 10,000 plants in 130 varieties. The flowering season is seasonal, so the timing of your visit matters if this garden is a priority. The park’s round pavilion hosts numerous events each year, including concerts and summer evenings with dancing; the programme may vary from year to year. The park is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Check that this accessibility information is still current before your trip.
For an active break, Nygårdsminde Parkgolf offers three smaller courses, called loops, each with nine holes. In Dronninglund Nature Park, the Eventyrstien features sculptures and audio experiences accessed via QR codes. Junglestien offers entertaining and challenging obstacles for children and the young at heart. These activities differ in character: park golf offers several courses, while each of the two trails has its own designed experiences.
Nygårdsminde Vineyard has 2,500 organically certified grapevines across two hectares. Vineyard tours include a wine tasting; bookings and seasonal availability may change, so check in advance. Asaa Harbour is now used mainly as a marina, and you can set off on fishing trips from there. Asaa Beach has held the Blue Flag for many years; check its current certification before your trip.
