Gerå appeals to travelers who want to take walking trails, river and coastal landscapes, and historic houses into account when choosing where to stay. Near Geraa and Melholt, there are three walking trails of different lengths; other landscape highlights range from the meandering river to the Kattegat. The coastal meadows are also of interest for seasonal birdwatching. Gerå therefore offers several specific themes to help guide your choice of destination.

Walking trails between river and coast

Near Geraa and Melholt, there are three walking trails measuring 7.6 km, 4.7 km and 3.7 km. All three start in Geraa, at the Sorensminde farm. This lets you compare the routes by their stated lengths; they also each offer different landscape highlights.

The red route follows the Gerå at several points. The river has retained its natural, meandering course along long stretches. There, it winds through the landscape and serves as a recurring point of reference along the route. The yellow route leads to the long Borgmestermolen pier, which walkers can explore. From the pier, there are views across the coastal bird sanctuary and the Kattegat.

The green route crosses the maritime foreland to the Kattegat and continues north along the old Kongevej from Hals to Frederikshavn. It also passes Hundeskoven. Numerous suicide torpedoes and a large amount of anti-aircraft equipment were found on a stretch of coast along this route at the end of the Second World War.

Coast and birdwatching

Gerå Strand lies 2 km east of Gerå on the Kattegat, within the Aså-Gerå Vildtreservat. From Gerå, you can reach Gerå Strand via Strandgårdsvej. At the car park on Strandgårdsvej, there are benches and information boards about the birdlife in the reserve. From there, a 350-metre path leads through varied natural scenery to the beach. Before your visit, it is advisable to check the current state of the facilities.

The reserve stretches from the southern part of Gerå to the southeastern part of Aså. The coastal meadows of Asaa and Geraa were designated a wildlife reserve in 2001. They are a popular destination for nature enthusiasts, especially birdwatchers; many birds of prey and waders can be observed there. Bird activity varies by season, so the time of year matters when setting expectations for sightings. Motor vehicles are not permitted in the Aså-Gerå Vildtreservat.

Historic houses in Gerå

Gerå has several well-preserved houses dating from the 18th century. Sorensminde is more than 400 years old and is considered the oldest house in the municipality. This architectural history adds a distinct cultural highlight to the area’s natural and coastal appeal. Those choosing between destinations who want to look beyond walking trails and birdwatching will also find a tangible connection to the town’s older buildings here.
