Dronninglund: Forest Trails, Lakes and Culture
Accommodation in Dronninglund
Marked trails in Dronninglund Storskov, lakes, church and mill history, as well as art and golf offer different ways to explore Dronninglund. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus your stay on hiking routes, historic sites or activities such as golf.
Forest, lakes and trails
Dronninglund Storskov lies at the southern end of the Jyske às and covers 961 ha. Three marked hiking trails differ in length: the Sømoseruten is 2 or 3 km long, the Bøgeskovsruten is 3.5 or 6 km long, and the Nüleskovsruten is 5 km long. The Sømoseruten therefore offers the shortest of the route options listed; on the Bøgeskovsruten, you can choose between two lengths. These details make it possible to compare routes by distance.
Another specific route is the 1.4 km-long Eventyrstien. It begins on the outskirts of Dronninglund and ends at Dronninglund Slot. Ăster Møllesø is a separate site: the lake is in Dronninglund and covers 24,000 m². A walk around it offers views of the water.
Dronninglund Naturpark lies between Dronninglund and Dronninglund Slot. It has a miniature golf course, tennis courts and padel courts. If you plan to use any of these facilities during your stay, please check in advance what will be available during your visit.
Church, monastery and castle
Dronninglund Kirke was built between 1160 and 1200 as the abbey church of the Hundslund nunnery. Its frescoes include depictions of the Nine Worthiesâa subject not known from other churches. Today, the church is structurally connected to the Dronninglund estate. The history of the church and estate can be explored as a distinct focus alongside the nature trails.
Dronninglund Slot originated as the original Hundslund monastery, which was probably founded by Benedictine nuns in the 12th century. Access is important to know before visiting: Dronninglund Slot is closed to the public, but can be viewed from the outside. Check its visitor status before your trip. The Eventyrstien ends at the castle; the route description indicates its endpoint.
Mill history and collections
Dronninglund has several distinct points of interest related to its milling history. Ăster Mølle is a 16th-century watermill that belonged to Dronninglund Slot. Dorf MøllegĂĽrd, on the other hand, tells the story of life on a mill farm at the beginning of the 20th century. The listed mill farm complex includes a 17th-century watermill.
A scenic trail from Dorf MøllegĂĽrd circles the mill pond. Along with the farm's history, this trail makes the site interesting for travellers who want to learn about a mill farm and its past in addition to the marked hiking trails. The mill pond at Dorf MøllegĂĽrd is separate from Ăster Møllesø.
Egnssamlingen for Ăstvendsyssel tells the story of Ăstvendsyssel from the Stone Age to the mid-20th century. Its Høstdagen is an annual tradition. If this event is important to your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year in advance.
Art and other activities
Dronninglund Kunstcenter is a three-storey exhibition venue with 1,200 m² of space and was built in 1977. From March to November, it presents changing exhibitions. As the programme is seasonal, it is worth checking the current exhibitions before your visit.
Golf is another option to consider when planning your trip: Dronninglund Golfklub has an 18-hole woodland course and welcomes visiting players. As visitor arrangements may change, check them in advance if you would like to play as a guest. For cycling, there is Forheksede Bakke in Dronninglund Storskov, where the water appears to flow uphill. Alongside hiking routes, these offer a distinctive cycling experience and a golf course as specific activity options.
