For a trip to Øster Melholt, hiking, cycling and Melholt Kirke can each offer a different focus. Around Geraa and Melholt, there are three hiking routes with lengths of 7.6 km, 4.7 km and 3.7 km. The Geraaruten runs from Melholt to Dronninglund Slot as regional recreational cycling route 54. The Nordsøstien adds to the selection with sections between Hou and Melholt, as well as from Melholt to Lille Vildmose.

Hiking routes and cycling tour compared

The three hiking routes differ in length: 3.7 km is the shortest, 7.6 km the longest, with 4.7 km in between. The difference between the shortest and longest route is 3.9 km. The 4.7 km route is 1 km longer than the shortest and 2.9 km shorter than the longest. This makes it possible to compare the three routes directly by their kilometre values. For the Geraaruten, by contrast, the route number 54 and the endpoints Melholt and Dronninglund Slot are the main points of reference. This information offers a different way to plan a cycling tour than the series of hiking-route lengths.

The Geraa–Melholt route passes Melholt Kirke. If you would like to combine a visit to the church with a hike, this route provides a specific point of reference.

The Nordsøstien: landscape, marking and length

Between Hou and Melholt, the Nordsøstien passes through woodland and open areas. As far as Melholt, the trail is marked with blue signs bearing a white, wavy “N”. The symbol provides a specific point of reference; nevertheless, pay attention to the local signage when you arrive. The landscape along this section and its trail markings are two different aspects you can take into account when planning your trip.

The Nordsøstien section from Melholt to Lille Vildmose is 32 km long and is part of the international Nordsøstien. The route in Denmark is stated to be about 1,500 km long. The figures refer to different scales: 32 km for the section mentioned, and around 1,500 km for the route through Denmark. For planning this section, the shorter figure is therefore the relevant one; the approximate total length places it within the larger route.

The Gerå is also among the named landscape features: it flows through the southern part of Melholt Plantage.

Melholt Kirke: visiting and building history

Melholt Kirke is an official wayside church and is open to visitors all year round, Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 15:30. It may be closed for weddings, funerals, holidays or public holidays. Before your visit, check the information from the parish so you can take possible closures into account when planning.

The church was built in 1910–1911 to designs by architect Ludvig Frederik Olesen (1853–1916). Its exterior walls are richly decorated with round-arch friezes across all the masonry surfaces. The construction dates and architect give a visit to the church a historical context; the round-arch friezes draw attention to a defining detail of its exterior. In this way, the church combines a specific building history with a clearly described architectural design.
