Hemmet: Cultural History, Harbour and Activities
Accommodation in Hemmet
Hemmet Church combines Romanesque and Gothic architectural features with historic furnishings. The harbour, Viking crafts and outdoor activities also offer different themes to consider when planning your trip.
Cultural history in Hemmet
At Hemmet Church, the chancel and nave are Romanesque, while the sacristy and tower are Gothic. There is also a Romanesque baptismal font and an altarpiece dating from around 1500. This allows you to distinguish between architectural features and furnishings with different stylistic and historical references.
The Renaissance pulpit at Hemmet Church is carved with acanthus leaves. The ornament adds a distinctive touch alongside the Romanesque and Gothic features of the church building. For travellers interested in architecture and fine craftsmanship, the church offers several specific details to look out for.
Another historic landmark is the Fahl Inn at Oblingvej 34, Sdr. Bork, 6893 Hemmet. It was built in 1856, well before 1924, the year of Hemmet Harbour’s oldest equipment shed. These two different buildings each have their own place in the historical timeline.
Crafts and everyday life at Bork Vikingehavn
At Bork Vikingehavn, visitors encounter people dressed as Vikings in the houses, occupied with crafts and household tasks. The displays draw attention to everyday activities. Reconstructed market plots have also been laid out in the town field as another part of the presentation.
Visitors can also try activities for themselves: they can write runes and make a bracelet with their own runes. This puts observing crafts and household tasks alongside two hands-on activities. If you are interested in Viking culture, the rune activities offer a practical way to engage with the subject.
Free parking is available at Bork Vikingehavn. If you plan to drive, check the latest official visitor information beforehand.
Harbour, routes and water
Hemmet Harbour on the fjord is used mainly by recreational fishers. There are 15 equipment sheds at the harbour; the oldest dates from 1924. Near Hemmet is Hemmet Gammel Havn, a small fishing village. Hemmet Harbour and Hemmet Gammel Havn therefore represent different things: a harbour used by recreational fishers and a nearby fishing settlement.
The Fritids & Naturparken ved Sdr. Bork Forsamlingshus has activity and fitness trails. The pétanque court there is also open for everyone to use. The trails and court offer different ways to spend time outdoors: exercising on the paths or playing pétanque at a designated spot.
Panoramarute 407 “Mellem Hav Og Fjord” passes through Hemmet. From Hemmet, it follows the cycle path south towards Nørre Bork. As route conditions can change, check the latest information before planning your route around it.
Hemmet is considered a good place for surfing. There is a surf school at Bork Havn Beach where visitors can book a course. The water at the beach is shallow and has no strong current. If you are planning to surf, you can take into account both the availability of bookable courses and this specific description of the water conditions.
