Discover Borris: heathland, the Skjern Å and a cycling route
Accommodation in Borris
For a trip to Borris, you can focus on several specific themes: routes along the Skjern Å, a downstream boat route, fishing in an area with clearly defined boundaries, and the “Skjern Enge og Å” cycling route. Borris Hede, the Skjern Enge natural area and events in the Borris area are also options. If you are looking for hotels in Borris, you can start by considering which of these themes you want to prioritize during your stay.
Places to visit along the Skjern Å
At a municipal road near Borris, Torsvig Åslynge has a rest area. From there, a path leads to a viewpoint and the Skjern Å. This gives the walk two specific points of interest: the view and the river. This can help with planning if you want to focus on a single walk with named destinations rather than a larger natural area.
Plan boating and fishing separately
On the main stretch of the Skjern Å, you may travel downstream from Borris to Ringkøbing Fjord in non-motorized boats, canoes and kayaks. Local navigation rules may change, so check the current regulations before setting out. Fishing is permitted in a different area: the fishing waters in Skjern Ådal extend from Borris Krog in the east to the cable ferries and Pumpestation Nord in the west. Their boundaries and applicable rules may also change, so check them before fishing. When planning, keep the activities distinct: for boating, the main route, direction and type of boat matter; for fishing, it is the extent of the fishing waters.
Heathland, wetlands and a cycling route
Borris Hede covers 4,720 hectares and is Denmark’s largest continuous heathland. Skjern Enge is a 2,200-hectare natural area consisting mostly of meadows, wetlands and lakes. It lies between Skjern and Tarm, along the route from Borris to Ringkøbing Fjord. The two landscapes have distinct characteristics: the expansive heathland on one hand, and Skjern Enge, shaped by meadows, wetlands and lakes, on the other.
The “Skjern Enge og Å” cycling route is about 49 kilometres long. It runs on asphalt for 29.5 kilometres and gravel for 16.5 kilometres; these sections are part of the total route. When planning your ride, you can therefore consider the total distance and known surfaces separately. Unlike boating, cycling is mainly about route length and surface, while on the Skjern Å the direction of flow and permitted types of boat are what count.
Events and getting there
Dalager Marked, a horse and traders’ market, is held every year in the Borris area. Dates and programme may change, so check the information for the year of your trip. Tractor Pulling is also associated with the Borris area at Easter, at the Borris Landbrugsskole arena. If you are travelling for this event, check the latest date and programme.
Borris is connected to public transport by train and bus. Check the timetables for your travel day to plan your arrival accordingly. Near Borris, there is also a basic overnight site at Borris Krog, with shelters, a fire pit and a composting toilet.
Choose your stay based on the reason for your trip
When looking for a hotel in Borris, you can first decide what you want to focus on: boating, fishing, the cycling route, the landscape or an event date. Each theme raises different planning questions—for example, the type of boat and direction of travel on the river, the cycling route’s surfaces or the dates of a market.
