More than 300 kilometres of coastline define Lolland and offer a wide range of outdoor activities. Protected fjord and lake landscapes sit alongside cultural sites where monastic history, art and regional produce can enrich your travel plans. When planning, first consider whether nature, historic sights, a cycling tour or a combination of these will shape your stay.

Discover art and cultural heritage

In Maribo, the monastery ruins sit beside Maribo Cathedral and Maribosøerne Nature Park. The ruins are open to visitors free of charge year-round; check access information again before your trip. The cathedral was built in the 15th century as part of a double monastery and is considered an important testament to Maribo’s history and cultural heritage. Inside the church, visitors can see a gravestone and the crypt with its coffin. The Klosterruten also connects to the town: it is one of two modern pilgrimage routes that cross in Maribo.

Another work of art makes an impression through its scale and arrangement: Dodekalitten consists of twelve stone pillars, seven to nine metres high. They stand in a circle with a diameter of 40 metres. The monument is located in a Lolland field overlooking Smålandsfarvandet and brings sculpture and music together in a landscape steeped in history. Paid tours with the artist Thomas Kadziola are available; tour offerings may change, so check in advance.

At Pederstrup Manor Museum, you can learn about the Reventlow family and the lives of the estate owners and servants 200 years ago. Richard Winthers Hus in Vindeby, by contrast, is a living work of art that combines painting, sculpture and photography. More than 55 original paintings cover its walls and ceilings. The two places offer different perspectives: Pederstrup presents a historical way of life, while Richard Winthers Hus foregrounds the connections between different art forms.

Fjord, lakes and trails

Nakskov Fjord Nature Park is part of Danske Naturparker. It includes ten large and small islands as well as Albuen, a 7.5-kilometre-long spit. Among islands, islets, bays and headlands, the park offers a sheltered area for kayaking. At Albuetangen, you can walk along a narrow spit between the Langelandsbælt and Nakskov Fjord. Albuen is also a cultural environment that bears witness to human activity over several centuries.

Maribosøerne Nature Park encompasses Søndersø, Røgbølle Sø, Hejrede Sø and Nørresø, along with their surrounding areas. Fields, meadows, marshes and woodland shape this estate landscape; the park is included in Friluftsrådet’s Danske Naturparker certification scheme. The nature school at Maribo Søndersø offers experiences in nature. In summer, boat trips on the lake with Anemonen are also available. If you plan to take this trip, check the timetable in advance.

For some active time in Reventlow Park, there is an orienteering course available year-round, developed in collaboration with Maribo Orienteringsklub. The course materials may change. This makes it different in format from a coastal walk or a boat trip: it is an orienteering course in the park, while the other activities focus on the water and scenery.

Cycling tours and regional produce

The Cykeløerne route is a 68-kilometre, multi-day cycling tour along Lolland’s north coast and across the islands of Fejø, Femø and Askø. Ferry connections from Kragenæs to all three islands provide access to the route. As ferry services may change, check the timetable before planning your trip. The route combines a multi-day cycling experience with visits to the islands, setting it apart from the walks and shorter outings mentioned above.

Traditions surrounding apples, juice and cider are also part of the islands on the Cykeløerne route, which are known for these products. Lolland’s food offering also includes produce grown in the island’s fertile soil and fish from Smålandshavet and the Baltic Sea. Østergaard Vinmageri produces handcrafted specialty wines from locally grown grapes and fruit from its own vineyards. Group tours with tastings are available, and the wines can also be bought in the farm shop. As visitor offerings may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.

More places to visit

At Knuthenborg Safaripark, Limpopoland features a large nature playground, a waterslide, rafts, a zip line, climbing towers, a water play area and a maze. Visitors can observe savannah animals and predators from their vehicles in large animal enclosures. Facilities and visitor offerings may change; check before your visit. For the Cykeløerne route, by contrast, the ferry connections from Kragenæs are a separate factor to consider when planning.
