Errindlev between the village church and the dike landscape
Accommodation in Errindlev
Errindlev combines a well-preserved village layout with architectural history, archaeological remains and a marked cycling route. The dike along Lolland’s south coast also shapes the regional context: its eastern endpoint is in Errindlev. This means the village, cultural heritage and landscape can be considered as distinct highlights of a stay.
Village Church and Dairy Building
In the heart of Errindlev, Errindlev Kirke stands on a hill that slopes down on all sides. Its architectural history spans several periods: the nave and chancel date from the Romanesque period, the chancel was extended in the Gothic period, and the tower was built during the Reformation. The different parts give the church a distinctive place in the village and illustrate how various building phases come together in one building.
Another listed building is the former cooperative dairy at Errindlevvej 34 B. At Errindlev Mejeri, Stolemuseet displays around 1,400 chairs dating from 1850 to the present day. The collection therefore ranges from historic pieces to the present. Visitors can also buy cheese to take away at a cheese shop in the dairy.
Memorial Sites and Archaeological Heritage
A memorial stone to theologian Niels Hemmingsen stands in the churchyard. It was erected in 1935 at the instigation of Lolland-Falsters Historiske Samfund; Hemmingsen was born in 1513. According to tradition, he may have been born in Errindlev or the surrounding area, but the exact location is uncertain.
Errindlev Studehave is also a site of archaeological interest. It contains a protected prehistoric burial mound and two unusual stone arrangements. These consist of circles of large stones with paved areas. The burial mound and stone arrangements represent different forms of prehistoric remains; the two structures can be distinguished by their described construction.
Dike, Harbour and Routes
On Lolland, a 63-kilometre-long dike runs along the entire south coast of the island, stretching from Nakskov in the west to Errindlev in the east. Errindlev Havn lies nearby, outside the main village. The harbour was built in 1907 with government support to replace the harbour at Bjernæs, which had disappeared as a result of dike-building works in the 1870s. The cultural environment around the harbour has first-priority status because of the dike, the harbour and the way they were built.
The 63 kilometres of dike describe the coastline of southern Lolland; the marked “Vilde heste” cycling route, which runs for 37 kilometres through Errindlev, is a separate feature. In Errindlev, you can stock up at the local shop. The two figures therefore relate to different aspects of planning: the course of the dike along the coast and a cycling route that passes through the village.
Activities Nearby
Errindlev Havn lies directly on the “Naturlandet rundt” experience route. Nearby, the harbour offers opportunities for fishing and recreational sailing. These activities complement the cycling route with things to do on the water, but the two routes should not be confused.
The accommodation options mentioned are also a useful point of reference for a stay at the harbour: a large shelter sleeps five people, and the spacious tent site accommodates 15. If you plan to use these sites, check the current capacity information before your visit. This will help you include the historic harbour landscape, activities on the water and available overnight options in your travel plans.
