Langø: Fishing Harbor, Village Character and Fjord Views
Accommodation in Langø
Langø combines fishing history and a historic village character with walking routes and activities on the water. Several different interests are relevant when planning your trip: the harbor and village center, the church and a prehistoric tomb, as well as views, walks, and kayaking. The distinctions below can help you explore Langø through its cultural history, landscape, or activities.
Harbor and Fishing History
Langø’s harbor lies in Nakskov Fjord and is sheltered by Albuen Tange. Langø is home to the largest fishing harbor in western Lolland. The excursion boat “Gaia” is based in the harbor. In the center, there are still steeping grounds where fishermen can dry and clean their nets. The harbor’s location, the excursion boat, and the net-drying grounds show different sides of the village: its geographical setting, its connection to excursions, and a traditional fishing function.
Village Character and History
The village center is a cultural landscape of considerable value, with old fishermen’s houses and a church. The village is also still home to the four former farms of the Langø village landowners’ association. Langø was once an island covering 170 hectares. Its historical landmarks therefore range from the area’s former landscape to structures still visible in the village.
Langø Church was built of red bricks between 1899 and 1901 and has a flat ceiling. Its altarpiece is a copy of Carl Bloch’s “Jesus in Gethsemane.” On Stendyssevej, a passage grave around 6,000 years old lies at Langø’s highest point. The mound offers views over the fjord. The church and the tomb differ considerably in age: the church dates from around 1900, while the passage grave reaches far back into prehistory.
On Foot and on the Water
Langø is well suited to walking; the “Langs fjorden” route passes through the village. A walk along Vester Oddevej offers views over Søndernor towards Albuen, with Langeland in the background. From the passage grave mound, you can see across the fjord. These two viewpoints offer different perspectives: from Vester Oddevej, the focus is on Søndernor, Albuen, and Langeland; from the mound, it is the fjord.
Langø offers particularly good conditions for kayaking. Langø Bådelaug rents out two kayaks for trips to Albuen, Enehøje, or around Nakskov Fjord. Guests at the marina can borrow bicycles from Langø Bådelaug by arrangement. There are also two shelter sites in Langø.
If you are choosing between activities on land and on the water, the descriptions differ mainly in their focus: for the walking routes, the route and views take center stage, while specific destinations are given for kayaking. This can help you decide whether you would rather plan walks and scenic views or a kayaking trip during your stay.
