Soesmarke: Cycling Routes and Local History

Soesmarke offers concrete points of interest to consider when choosing a place to stay, with cycling, birdwatching and local history among them. The two cycling routes offer different points of reference for planning: “Fuglenes fristeder” is characterised by specific route and landscape features, while “A Haven for Birds” is defined by its distance and route. When looking for a hotel, you can use these themes as criteria for deciding what to focus on during your trip—for example, the route features for a cycling tour, or Guldborgland Centralskole for a cultural and historical perspective on the town.

“Fuglenes fristeder” cycling route

The “Fuglenes fristeder” cycling route has a signposted starting point on Spurvestræde in Soesmarke. It passes through Storskoven and along quiet country roads, several of which have cycle paths. Kallø Grå is one of the two bird protection areas highlighted by the route. Bicycles may be taken into the reserve, but must be walked there. Another section of the route goes around the Guldborgsund Tunnel and offers views across the Guldborgsund. This tour therefore brings together route features, a bird protection area and views across the sound as different aspects to consider when planning.

“A Haven for Birds” and birdwatching

The “A Haven for Birds” cycling route is 35 kilometres long. It starts and ends in nearby Guldborg, with Soesmarke along the way. Symbols depicting birdwatching towers mark the route. Its length provides a concrete point of reference for planning a trip, while its start and finish in Guldborg help put the route in context geographically. By comparison, “Fuglenes fristeder” can be described in terms of individual route sections and the rule requiring bicycles to be walked in Kallø Grå.

There are also specific birdwatching points of interest beyond the route markers: Kallø Grå Reserve has a birdwatching tower, as does Majbølle Nor Nature Reserve. Kallø Grå is also one of the two bird protection areas highlighted by “Fuglenes fristeder”.

School history and present-day use

Guldborgland Centralskole was located in Soesmarke, near Guldborg. Following renovation, it began operating on 17 April 1958. Today, the buildings are used as a cultural and leisure centre. The history of this site therefore includes both a precisely dated period of school operations and its present-day cultural and recreational use. This adds a different focus for exploring Soesmarke alongside the cycling routes and birdwatching.

Practical information

There is a toilet at the “Rasteplads Soesmarke” rest area. This is a practical point to note alongside the town’s landscape and historical attractions. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up whether the cycling routes and birdwatching, or the history and present-day use of Centralskole, are more important for your stay.
