Rudersdal Municipality: Ice Age Landscapes, Culture and Trails
Accommodation in Rudersdal Municipality
Ridges, undulating dead-ice landscapes and meltwater valleys shape Rudersdal’s landscape, formed during the Ice Age. They came into being between 20,000 and 16,000 years ago. Along the Øresund coast, steep slopes are part of the landscape; they formed as sea and land levels rose while the ice melted. The short terminal moraine hill of Landsebakken shows how different elevation measurements complement each other: it lies 68 metres above sea level and also rises 15 to 20 metres above its surroundings.
Trails for different plans
The KulturSlangen is about 32 kilometres long and runs from Næsseslottet by Lake Furesø to Vedbæk Harbour and the Øresund. It connects nature, art and history, following a continuous route through residential neighbourhoods and urban areas. You can start at any point along the way. The KulturSlangen also includes six shorter routes, ranging from 3 to 9 kilometres. Another signposted option is the FamilieRuten: it is 21.5 kilometres long in total and can be travelled on foot or by bicycle. The Grisestien between Nærum and Vedbæk follows a former railway line. The tracks were removed in 1923; today, the route is a nature trail.
In Rude Skov, there are different ways to get around: the blue-marked mountain bike route is 10 kilometres long and technically challenging, with many metres of elevation gain. A hiking route marked with yellow dots can be shortened or extended using other roads and paths. The Rude Skov Rundt route has camping and fire sites. There is also an accessible route around Ebberøddam and Blegmandsmosen. Rude Skov can be reached by bus 354 from Holte Station and bus 197 from Birkerød Station; check connections before setting out.
History, art and archaeology
Mothsgården is Denmark’s oldest surviving country estate. Its permanent exhibition covers the history of the Rudersdal area over a period of 1,000 years; as exhibition programmes may change, it is worth checking the latest information before your visit. Mothsgården is also a good starting point for walks in Kirkeskoven or by Søllerød Sø.
The Vedbæk finds are among Europe’s most exceptional discoveries from the Mesolithic hunter-gatherer period. More graves from this period have been found in Vedbæk than anywhere else in Denmark. During construction of Vedbæk Skole in 1975, a total of 17 graves containing the remains of 22 people were discovered. The story of the finds is told at the site where they were discovered. Søllerød Kirke, a medieval church, offers another way to explore the past: it was built before 1180 from limestone blocks from Stevns, which were brought in via Vedbæk.
Gl. Holtegaard brings together art and a historic garden: its Baroque garden features a sculpture park, and the venue serves as an art gallery for changing exhibitions of both contemporary and older art. The programme includes classical concerts, talks and events. Café Alma serves coffee, lunch and wine, focusing on organic, seasonal ingredients and local producers; café details may change. Næsseslottet also adds to the cultural history: its main building was constructed between 1782 and 1784 in the Louis XVI style. The Næsseslotsturen takes you through the history of friendship and the 18th-century fascination with romantic English landscape gardens, along a route of 3.1 kilometres, or 4.15 kilometres including Luknam.
Nature and waterside experiences
Vaserne is a 135-hectare protected area of lake, marsh and swamp forest. It provides a habitat for more than 180 bird species, whose presence may vary depending on the season. A long access ramp at the bird tower leads to the lower level and is intended for wheelchair users and people with mobility difficulties. Along Chr. Winthers Sti, a roughly 12-metre-long birdwatching bridge offers views of the birdlife on the lake and along the reedbed.
There are different options by the water, too: Skodsborg Strandpark has a year-round accessible bathing platform; check access conditions on site. You can swim and sail in the Øresund at Vedbæk Harbour, though bathing conditions may vary seasonally. Vedbæk Nordstrand has exercise equipment, a playground and bathing platforms. Vedbæk Sydstrand offers beach volleyball courts, a fitness area, and a sandbox with a wooden ship and play equipment; beach facilities may change.
If you are considering a hotel stay in Rudersdal Municipality, it helps to plan your trip around your interests: cultural trails and historic sites offer a different focus from birdwatching, forest trails or bathing spots. Distances and ways of getting around also vary.
