Skodsborg between beach, nature and history
Accommodation in Skodsborg
Skodsborg offers different highlights for your trip: the coastal beach park, traces of its history as a spa and seaside resort, and trails through nature. If you are looking for a hotel in Skodsborg, you can first consider which of these sides of the town you want to shape your days. This lets you tailor your choice to your interests without treating the beach, culture and outdoor activities as interchangeable.
Beach Park and Bathing Pier
Skodsborg Beach Park is a long, narrow park between Strandvejen and the coast. From there, you have direct access to the water. The narrow sandy beach is 300 metres long and 25 metres wide. The park also has a small seating area with benches, a kiosk and public toilets. This means you will find a beach, places to sit and practical facilities all in one place.
A bathing pier with step-free access is open year-round. It provides another way to enjoy the water in addition to the sandy beach. There is a time qualification to bear in mind when considering water quality: bathing water at Skodsborg Beach was rated “excellent” based on data from 2022 to 2025. This rating applies to the stated data period.
History of the Spa Town
Skodsborg was granted the status of a spa and seaside resort towards the end of the 19th century. Skodsborg Bathing Sanatorium was founded in 1898. Jakob Carl Ottosen founded it with his wife, following an American model. In 1925, the sanatorium was the largest spa resort in the Nordic countries. These historical milestones show how closely the town’s former reputation was tied to the bathing sanatorium.
Frederik VII is also connected with the town’s history. His grotto in Skodsborg was built the year after the king purchased Skodsborg Palace. Frederik VII used it for festive occasions; the grotto was designated a protected site in 1950.
Villas and Places of Remembrance
Large, heritage-worthy villas line Strandvejen, forming its distinctive character. A memorial stone on Strandvejen near Skodsborgbakken commemorates resistance fighter Ib Mogens Gundelach. Both are part of a local history shaped by more than individual historic buildings.
Another memorial can be found in the garden in front of the spa hotel at Skodsborg Strandvej 139: a bust of Carl Ottosen stands there. It commemorates the founder of Skodsborg Bathing Sanatorium. The bust’s location and purpose make it a specific point of reference in the sanatorium’s history.
Trails and Nature Experiences
The SkodsborgRuten is a route for exercise and nature experiences in Jægersborg Hegn. It starts and ends at Skodsborg Kurhotel and Spa in Skodsborg. Its course passes through Jægersborg Hegn, the northern part of Jægersborg Dyrehave and Raadvad. The route also runs through part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Par Force Hunting Landscape in North Zealand. This offers a different perspective on your stay than the beach park, with nature and the World Heritage landscape taking centre stage.
An outing to Jægersborg Hegn can start at Skodsborg Station. There are train and bus connections there, as well as a large car park nearby. In the surrounding area, a marked yellow trail runs through Bøllemosen, forming a four-kilometre loop through the forest. Bøllemosen can also be explored on a path around the bog or via a boardwalk across it; there are several places to sit along the boardwalk. The trails mentioned differ in length and route, offering various ways to experience nature.
At Skodsborg Station, KulNaturhuset offers the opportunity to take part in herb walks, talks, music in nature, and various exercise and sports activities. So, in addition to beaches and historic sites, there is also a choice of organised activities in nature.
