A trip to Hovedstaden can be shaped by very different interests: from longer routes and urban trails to gardens and historic sites. The examples below offer specific ideas to help you plan.

Trails for Different Travel Plans

In the Royal North Zealand National Park, there are designated hiking and cycling trails through varied landscapes. The Tisvilde Trail is approximately 70 kilometers long and passes through deep forests, open fields, and lakes. It starts at Esrum Abbey and ends in Tisvildeleje. This gives you both its approximate length and its start and end points.

The Castle Route, also known as Route 48, is a similar length: at about 75 kilometers, it is a moderately challenging cycling route. Comparing it with the approximately 70-kilometer Tisvilde Trail gives you a sense of their relative lengths, while the type of travel and difficulty level are specified only for the Castle Route. Another trail runs for 13 kilometers around Lake Søborg; along the way, gravel paths alternate with some paved sections, and the route also includes a distinctive footbridge.

Arresø offers a different natural highlight: the lake is a protected bird area where you may spot white-tailed eagles or ospreys. The designated trails, the landscapes along the Tisvilde Trail, and the possibility of birdwatching appeal to different interests, without requiring you to combine them into one itinerary.

Urban Trails and Culture

The Harbour Circle is a 13-kilometer walking and cycling route around Copenhagen Harbor. You can walk or cycle it in sections of 2, 4, or 7 kilometers. This makes it easy to distinguish the full route length from its shorter sections. The Bicycle Snake offers a different urban highlight: it is a curved cycling bridge over Copenhagen Harbor.

In North Zealand, the Par Force Hunting Landscape preserves a grid of hunting avenues, numbered stone posts, and hunting lodges. Its focus is therefore not just a single castle, but a landscaped setting with avenues and markers. If you are interested in the connection between cultural heritage and landscape, this offers a different focus from a single attraction.

The garden at Fredensborg Palace combines the formal design of an 18th-century Baroque garden with wooded areas and lakes in a more romantic landscape. Seven avenues radiate from the palace. The main garden is open to the public year-round; check for any short-notice access restrictions before your visit. A boat trip runs from the Fredensborg side of Lake Esrum to a forest café near Dronningens Bøge. If you plan to take this trip, check the current sailing times in advance.

Frederiksborg Castle stands on three islands surrounded by a lake and gardens. The ruins of Søborg Castle were once among Denmark’s strongest medieval fortresses. These two examples offer different historical perspectives: a castle built on islands and the former significance of a fortress whose ruins remain today.

Amalienborg consists of four separate Rococo palaces around a square; two of them are open to the public. The changing of the guard takes place daily at 12 noon. Check the current schedule before your visit. Copenhagen also regularly hosts the nonprofit food and culture market Grønt Marked at various locations. As seasonal dates and locations may change, it is worth checking the details for your travel dates.

Then tailor your choice to the place you actually want to visit, and check the latest information for activities with set schedules.
