Herlev Municipality: Wetlands, Art and Culture
Accommodation in Herlev Municipality
In Herlev Municipality, protected wetlands and green spaces are as much a part of the landscape as contemporary art, historic sites and local events. You can plan your stay around nature, culture or a specific seasonal occasion. There are landscapes and trails to explore, as well as exhibitions, concerts and leisure activities.
Wetlands and Green Spaces
Hjortespringkilen is a protected natural area with bogs, dense woodland and several lakes, along with their wildlife. You can explore it on foot, by bicycle or on horseback; it also has 2.4 kilometres of dedicated riding trails. Træbanken offers a different experience: this arboretum features Danish trees and shrubs, with information boards about the species. There is running water near the shelter, which accommodates eight people.
The wetlands also vary in character. Smør- and Fedtmosen serve as breeding and resting grounds for almost 200 bird species. Sømosen is a shallow wetland with pools, reeds, and small holms and islands. Trails allow you to walk around the area; the protected area covers 23 hectares. Sømosen is also one of Denmark’s 25 known sacrificial bogs, where spoils of war were sacrificed.
Bakkegården Nature Park opened in August 2026. Amid its plants, water and wildlife, visitors can learn about nature and biodiversity outdoors. The grounds contain more than 500 different plant species or types. At Hospitalsparken, various planting beds in Sansehaven stimulate the senses. Hanevangsparken has a public playground with a basketball court, swings, a zip line, and equipment for climbing and balancing. Grønne Akse is a green corridor for pedestrians and cyclists.
Art, History and Events
Gammelgaard is an art gallery for Danish and international contemporary art, presenting four changing exhibitions each year. It is located in one of the original farms of Hjortespring, which date back to the 1760s. Admission to the exhibitions is free. Café Gammelgaard serves homemade cakes and light lunches. Gammelgaard also includes Musikparken, where you can play outdoor musical instruments.
Herlev Festuge is a local town festival held every year in calendar week 35. In the town centre, you’ll find club stalls, music, stage entertainment and food from a wide range of cuisines. Herlev Kirke dates back to the Middle Ages and hosts several concerts featuring new and older music; dates vary for each concert. Herlev Teaterbio screens films for all audiences and is home to the Filmpaletten and Skolebio film clubs.
Hjulmandens Hus was built in 1814 by wheelwright Peder Hansen. In 2026, it is scheduled to open on Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm during the season from May to August or September, as well as in December. On days with entertainment, musical performances take place at 2 pm, with coffee and cake for sale. Check the specific dates before visiting.
Swimming and Ice Skating
Hjortespringbadet is a public swimming pool with four pools and a covered water slide. The 34-degree therapy pool is 110 to 130 centimetres deep. Entry is included with admission to the swimming centre; the pool is open to everyone except during evening sessions for adults. Opening hours may change depending on the programme and operating conditions, so it’s best to check before visiting.
Herlev Skøjtehal has two connected ice rinks. The training rink opened in September 2019; facilities for playing, training and competing on the ice have been available there since 1977.
