Protected coastal meadows, trails through varied landscapes and graphic art give Tårnby Municipality many different facets. There are also opportunities for swimming and water sports, a harbour and special places such as Den Blå Planet. To plan your trip, it’s worth deciding what matters most: nature experiences and routes, water activities or culture.

Experience nature and compare routes

Kalvebod Fælled is part of the EU’s Natura 2000 network and is protected. Its coastal meadows, in particular, are protected for their plant and bird life. On the hiking route through the area, you can watch birds of prey hunting, along with larks, lapwings, swans, ducks and other migratory birds. Naturpark Amager covers 3,500 hectares and comprises Amager Fælled, Kalvebod Fælled, Kongelunden and Dragør Sydstrand.

The routes vary in length and scenery. The Hestefælledruten connects forest, meadow and beach; the new dyke offers a view. The Amarminoen is 24 kilometres long, starts at DR Byen, crosses Kalvebod Fælled and ends in the south at Dragør. Along the way, it passes open coastal meadows, the gnarled oaks on the coast at Kongelunden, a bird sanctuary and Pinseskoven, Denmark’s largest naturally seeded birch forest.

The TårnbyTuren is about 15 kilometres long. It runs from Kastrup Lystbådehavn through several of the city’s green spaces to Naturpark Amager. The route is accessible to prams and wheelchairs, but some sections follow uneven grass and forest paths. On the Pinseskovsruten, you can enjoy an open birch forest and, with a little luck, spot fallow deer.

Water, beaches and harbour

Kastrup Strandpark provides direct access to the Øresund: you can swim from the beach, bathing jetty and diving boards. Fishing, sailing and diving are also possible there. Kastrup Søbad is open year-round and free to use; its changing rooms and toilets are accessible. Check the bathing information again before your trip.

Kastrup Lystbådehavn comprises a historic harbour dating from 1954 and a modern harbour dating from 1985. The harbour has space for around 900 boats and also includes clubhouses and maritime activities. This means you can choose between swimming spots and a harbour with its own history and maritime character, all in the same destination.

Art and special visits

Kastrupgårdsamlingen is a state-recognised art museum dedicated to modern graphic art, with several special exhibitions each year. Its graphic art collection includes more than 7,000 works, mostly by artists based in Denmark and elsewhere in the Nordic region. An educational programme on modern graphic art gives participants the chance to print their own graphic works; check the booking arrangements before adding it to your plans.

There is also art to discover outside the museum: under the title “Gå og oplev kunst”, visitors can discover statues and sculptures in Tårnby, as well as find the blue benches by artist Jeppe Hein. Another kind of visit awaits at National Aquarium Denmark, Den Blå Planet. The aquarium is in Kastrup, 600 metres from Kastrup station on metro line M2. On behind-the-scenes tours, visitors see areas used by animal keepers, maintenance corridors, tanks for fish before they join the exhibition, and the large pump and filtration system. Check dates and booking conditions in advance.

Green spaces for everyday life

Byparken offers a range of ways to stay active and spend time outdoors, including a nature playground, fitness equipment, facilities for skating, pétanque, basketball and cycling, as well as a perennial garden and a beech-hedge maze. Paths and activity routes add to the facilities. In Ugandaskoven, a raised viewing platform looks out over the forest canopy and a small pond.

Skolebotanisk Have offers opportunities to enjoy nature and be active, including searching for small animals on land and in the water. Other residents may also walk there or sit on benches or on the grass, provided the area is not being used by schools or daycare centres at the time. Keep this condition in mind when planning a visit.

Getting around by metro

Copenhagen Airport metro station is directly connected to Terminal 3. During the day and in the evening, the metro runs every four to six minutes; the journey from Nørreport to the airport takes 15 minutes. Check the frequency and journey time before your trip if you’re planning your arrival around them.
