Gentofte: Lakeside Paths, Parks and Culture
Accommodation in Gentofte
Gentofte combines nature experiences with historic sites and a diverse cultural offering. A walking trail approximately four kilometres long runs along Gentofte Sø; the area is Gentofte’s largest natural area and is used for exercise, play and recreation, as well as for nature experiences. The approximate trail length gives you a concrete reference point for planning your day.
Lakes, wetlands and green paths
At Brobækmose, woodland, marsh and bog give way to one another. Wild orchids and a varied birdlife are among its distinctive natural features. A treetop hide in Brobæk Mose by Gentofte Sø offers views of otherwise hidden lakes. This natural area therefore offers a variety of experiences: the lakeside trail, changing landscapes and views from the hide.
You can also explore Gentofte by bicycle: four cycling routes and a heart route pass through the municipality and near major and minor attractions. The Park Route runs past or through numerous green spaces and parks. If you prefer to plan a shorter break in nature, Hundesømosen offers varied opportunities for recreation, play and nature experiences. Its western part is designated as a natural forest.
Charlottenlund Palace Park offers a different kind of garden landscape, laid out in the Romantic style. Charlottenlund Forest has large and small lawns connected by numerous small paths. Bernstorff Palace Garden was created in the late 1760s in the French Rococo style. Today, its appearance is defined by large grass areas surrounded by Danish woodland; the palace and garden are open to the public.
Forts, museums and architecture
Charlottenlund Fort was built as part of Copenhagen’s sea fortifications. Charlottenlund Beach Park has been a public park since 1932 and is used for sunbathing and summer visits. It has public toilets and a kiosk; the bathing jetty provides wheelchair access to the water. As facilities and access conditions may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.
Øregaard Museum presents changing special exhibitions of Danish and international art. Its collection covers 200 years of Danish art, from 1750 to 1950. The building was originally constructed between 1806 and 1808 as a country residence for wholesale merchant and shipowner Johannes Søbøtker and his family. The building’s history and art collection thus offer two different perspectives on a museum visit.
The historic Garderhøj Fort has been renovated and is now open to everyone as an educational centre. Its interactive exhibitions explore the history of the First World War: visitors can train like soldiers, send Morse code messages and operate a working replica tower. Gentofte Fire Museum is located in the municipality’s former fire station, dating from 1909. Its collection traces the development of the fire service from the mid-19th century to the present day and includes Northern Europe’s oldest motorised fire engine built in Denmark, dating from 1919.
Tranen, the municipality’s contemporary art exhibition venue, is located in Gentofte Main Library. Its programme showcases new, young and experimental artists from the Danish and international contemporary art scene. Exhibition formats include installations, virtual realities and images in new forms. Gentofte Cinema, the oldest cinema in Gentofte, adds to the cultural offering.
Ordrupgaard also has a particular focus on art and design: the state art museum is known for its extensive collection of 19th- and 20th-century French and Danish art. The park features installations and sculptures created especially for Ordrupgaard by various contemporary artists. At the Finn Juhl House, you can experience the work, interior design and life of Danish furniture architect Finn Juhl; architecture, design and art come together there.
