On Halsnæs, walking trails pass fjords and coastal landscapes, while local sites and museums tell stories of fishing, industry and the life of a polar explorer. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can start by considering whether hiking, nature watching, time at the beach or culture will shape your travel plans.

Walking routes of varying lengths

The Fjordstien is a walking and cycling route that runs along the Roskilde Fjord and Isefjord, close to the coast. There are several basic nature campsites along the route. The Nordkyststien is also designed for walking and cycling and runs from Hundested to Helsingør.

For a hike across all of Halsnæs, the 52.7-kilometre Halsninoen is a different proposition: it runs from Hundested via Arrenakke and Arrenæs to the Strø Bjerge hills. The route is designed primarily for traditional walking on soft paths; nature experiences and varied landscapes are as much a part of its character as peace and quiet. Many regional train stations and bus stops are close to the Halsninoen. Check timetables separately if you plan to use public transport.

Shorter is the approximately 10-kilometre Halsnæs Sundhedskorridor, which starts and ends at Hundested station. Information boards or audio guides, along with suggestions for short nature activities, accompany the route. Kongemagt og Vandets Kraft offers another choice of distance: the trail can be walked in 5, 7 or 11 kilometres and passes, among other places, Dronningholm Castle Ruin and the beaver-watching hut at Dronningholm Mose.

Heathland, views and wildlife watching

Melby Overdrev is the largest heath on Zealand. You can hike, observe plants and insects, and swim here; swimming is a seasonal activity. At Dronningholm Mose, there is a freely accessible beaver-watching hut that is open year-round. However, there is no guarantee of spotting a beaver.

Ølsted Grusgrav was once a gravel pit and has been transformed into a recreational nature area with paths, viewpoints and facilities for day trips and outdoor recreation. From its highest point, 47 metres above sea level, you can see across Roskilde Fjord and Lake Arresø. Ullerup Skov has a maze and a combined shelter and fire hut with a barbecue area and a bridge by a small lake.

Coastal towns and experiences on the water

Hvide Klint is a nature-rich, protected open-air area close to town, for children and adults of all ages. Its features include a 108-metre-long activity bridge and an underwater trail along the coast. Liseleje Strand is a sandy beach on the Kattegat coast, described as child-friendly and awarded Blue Flag status. Beach designations and facilities may change seasonally. During the bathing season, from 1 June to 1 September, there is step-free access to the water’s edge; check the current dates before your trip.

Lynæs Surfcenter offers equipment and lessons for kitesurfing, windsurfing, SUP and kayaking. Booking requirements and seasonal availability may vary. For trips in small watercraft, the digital Halsnæs Kajakkort map indicates suitable options. The M/S Frederikke excursion boat offers a scenic trip on Lake Arresø, combining nature experiences with storytelling. The season and timetable may vary; check the times when planning your trip.

Village history and maritime culture

Kikhavn is the oldest fishing harbour village on Halsnæs. Its many large thatched farms and houses shape a historic village landscape that tells of the connection between farming and fishing. Cars are not allowed in the narrow, winding streets. Park outside the village and explore Kikhavn on foot.

North of the harbour, Hundested Skanse sits on the coastal slope; it is a cultural monument and visitor attraction. In Hundested, Knud Rasmussen’s House, now a museum, tells the story of the polar explorer’s life and achievements. It stands on a natural site near Spodsbjerg Fyr and offers views of the Kattegat. At Hundested Havn, Backhaus Brown runs a working glass studio where glass art is made; visitor arrangements may vary.

If you’re interested in architecture and community life, you can explore the village’s distinctive architecture at the Dyssekilde Ecovillage and learn about the development of a modern eco-community. Visits take place on a recurring basis; dates and booking arrangements may vary.

Industrial history in Frederiksværk

Frederiksværk is designated a national industrial monument. Gjethuset is a converted 18th-century cannon foundry building. It hosts theatre, concerts and international art exhibitions; the programme may change. At Arsenalet, a museum presents more than 250 years of industrial development. It also serves as an information centre for Kongernes Nordsjælland National Park and its nature experiences. The Krudtværksmuseet showcases historic powder mills along the canal.

Farming and time outdoors

At Tothaven, visitors can meet dairy goats, ponies, young animals and other farm animals. Goat’s milk is made into handmade ice cream and cheese, which you can try in the café and farm shop. Opening days and product availability may vary, so it’s worth checking both in advance. In this way, walking trails, coastal towns, wildlife watching and cultural sites offer different ways to shape your trip to Halsnæs.
