Brøndby Municipality: Coast, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Brøndby Municipality
Vestvolden and the beach park give Brøndby Municipality distinct characteristics: a historic fortification on one side and a vast coastal and recreational landscape on the other. There are also routes, churches and cultural attractions that can shape a stay in different ways, depending on your interests.
Coast and Fortification History
The section of Vestvolden that runs through Brøndby is part of a 14.2-kilometre protected fortification of historical value and importance for biodiversity and the environment. Information boards and games at Vestvolden in Brøndby introduce visitors to the fortification's history. The beach park in Brøndby Strand is a seven-kilometre coastal and recreational area. Its landscape includes white sandy beaches, dunes, lakes, meadows, dry grasslands and small areas of woodland. Near Gyvelhuse and Strandporten, there is a beach with Blue Flag status; the award is seasonal and applied for annually.
Brøndby Harbour also offers its own way to experience the landscape: the marina is the northernmost one in Køge Bugt Beach Park. Its location and facilities make it a suitable starting point for trips into the woods and to the beach. There is also a playground at the harbour where children can play while the family enjoys the view.
Routes, Woods and Exercise
The four Clover Trails in Brøndbyøster are about two to 14 kilometres long. They all start and end at the Clover Trail marker by Brøndbyøster Station. This gives you a choice of several marked distances, rather than just one fixed circular route. Much longer is the 42.195-kilometre Vestegnsruten, which passes through Brøndby Strand, among other places. You can travel all or part of it on foot, by bicycle or running. There are also walking and cycling paths in Esplanade Park.
Brøndby Woods offers nature experiences all year round. At the forest's Festpladsen, you will find benches, tables, a fire pit, a nature playground and exercise equipment. The outdoor areas of Brøndby Nature School are open for independent visits and use, as long as you treat them with care and leave them clean. The nature school also holds three public events each year; dates vary.
Churches, History and Art
Brøndbyøster Church was built around 1150 from fieldstone and limestone, and is one of Denmark's oldest surviving churches. Brøndbyvester Church is considered the oldest building in Brøndbyvester parish; its stone church was probably built from chalk stone in the 12th century. At the Medieval Village, you can see reconstructed houses from 1350 and farm animals. Free public events for families and friends are held there; dates vary.
The Suburb Museum presents Brøndby's local history in public spaces, including through pop-up exhibitions and guided city walks. Its permanent exhibition, “Ta' på tur i tiden”, is on display at Kulturhuset Brønden. The outdoor art experiences offered by “Bykunst i Brøndby” are also free. Those interested in sports history can relive the stories of athletes and memorable moments in sports history at the DIF Museum. The museum is not open daily; arrange your visit in advance with the management.
Events and Planning Your Visit
The cultural programme includes a range of formats and takes place throughout the year. Brøndby Culture Night is held every year on the first Friday in October. Store Cykeldag is an annual cycling event that includes visits to local attractions and businesses. During the winter half of the year, Brøndbyøster Church hosts concerts featuring music from the Middle Ages to the present day, including solo and choral performances. CultureCamp, meanwhile, is a free creative winter holiday programme at Kulturhuset Brønden for children and young people from Brøndby.
At Dyregården Søholt, children and young people learn to care for a variety of animals, including reptiles, horses, pigs, chickens, rabbits, birds and goats. Rabbit show-jumping tournaments and other animal competitions are also held there. The Medieval Village combines reconstructed houses with farm animals and public events, while Dyregården Søholt focuses on interacting with animals. When planning your stay, these differences can help you tailor your itinerary to cultural history, events or animal experiences.
Plan your stay around the experiences that interest you most in Brøndby Municipality.
