Cista Provo Municipality is shaped by archaeological sites, stećci and church architecture. In Cista Velika, the site of Cista Velika – Velika and Mala Crljivica is one of the two Croatian components of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Stećci – Medieval Tombstone Graveyards”. It has been inscribed since 15 July 2016. Other archaeological areas and structures offer their own historical points of interest.

Archaeological sites in Cista Velika

The Crljivica archaeological zone is in Cista Velika, directly beside the main Trilj–Imotski road, and extends for about 200 metres. It includes the route of the ancient Salona–Tilurij–Nove–Narona road. Crljivica thus brings together a specifically identified road location and a connection to a historic route.

The Crkvine archaeological site is in western Cista Velika, about 100 metres south of the Trilj–Imotski road. It includes an Early Christian baptistery and two ancient cisterns. The baptistery and cisterns represent different architectural remains within the same archaeological area.

The Osoje-Mandarića strana archaeological zone is on Osoje Hill in Cista Velika. Its prehistoric hillfort has a plateau measuring about 170 × 160 metres. Visible remains of megalithic walls have been preserved; the hillfort may date to the Iron Age. The approximate plateau size and cautious dating provide two different points of reference for understanding the site.

Stećci and archaeological sites in Biorine

Biorine also has remains from different periods. The Biorine archaeological site includes a prehistoric tumulus and a medieval cemetery with stećci, which developed in the 14th and 15th centuries. At the Lazine site in Biorine, thirteen stećci form another cemetery. A dry-stone wall divides the tombstones into two groups; they were made in the 14th and 15th centuries. Lazine thus combines a clear spatial division with a date range for the tombstones.

About ten decorated stećci have been preserved at the Zadužbina site in Cista Velika. Their motifs can be broadly dated to the 15th century. Unlike the tombstones at Lazine, the emphasis here is on their decoration; at Lazine, the defining features are the division into groups by the dry-stone wall and the dating across two centuries.

Churches and rural architecture

The old Church of St John the Baptist in Dobranje was built in 1740, and the old Church of St Anthony of Padua in Svib in 1747. Both are considered examples of 18th-century folk architecture. Their construction dates, seven years apart, can thus be compared within the same architectural context.

A different period of construction is evident at the Parish Church of St Peter the Apostle in Cista Provo: it was built of dressed stone in 1914. In Dobranje, the Sklop Vuletić building complex includes the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk. The complex dates to the 18th century and has pronounced defensive features. The church and the complex illustrate different aspects of religious architectural history, with different construction dates and architectural descriptions.

Dobranje’s rural architectural heritage also includes Vuletića staje. This distinctive secondary settlement structure was used to house people and livestock during the summer grazing season. This use makes the link between the settlement form and seasonal pastoralism tangible.

Historic routes and landscape

The Gradina in Cista Velika controlled the old route leading east from the Cetina Valley, which is still in use today. Another named site is Gradina Vitrenik, south of the centre of Cista Velika. It stands at an elevation of 650 metres and has a very well-preserved stone defensive ring built using dry-stone construction. The two Gradina sites therefore represent different features: one is associated with an old route, while the other is notable for its location and preserved fortifications.

Ilkovaća Cave is also on Vitrenik. Finds in the cave provide evidence of settlement dating back to the Neolithic. The archaeological history of the area thus reaches back to a much earlier period than the medieval stećci and the churches of the 18th and 20th centuries.

Nature is also part of the area’s character: several legally protected species of wild orchid grow in the Cista Provo area. Cista Provo lies on the western edge of the Imotska krajina region, offering a regional point of reference alongside its archaeological and church heritage.
